Jessica Alba (45) Trades Gowns for Sharp Black Tailoring at Tom Cruise’s ‘Digger’ Premiere

Every big Tom Cruise premiere doubles as a Hollywood reunion, and Jessica Alba’s appearance at the ‘Digger‘ premiere fits right into that tradition. The star has a history with Cruise, and the Los Angeles event drew plenty of his past collaborators.

The film comes from director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, whose first English-language feature since ‘The Revenant’ arrives with a big rollout. It held its world premiere in London on September 22, where Catherine, Princess of Wales, joined Cruise on the carpet.

Then came Los Angeles. The US premiere took place on Monday, September 28, at the Directors Village theater in Westwood, with the carpet running along Broxton Avenue and a giant rust-covered shovel towering outside the entrance. That is where Alba arrived in black tailoring instead of a gown.

Alba wears a double-breasted black blazer over a black satin bandeau top, with matching wide-leg trousers. She keeps one hand in her pocket, and the shovel from the set dressing is visible behind her.

Her honey-blonde hair falls in loose, center-parted waves, and layered necklaces with a turquoise pendant add a touch of color. Fashion outlets said she traded gowns for power tailoring, and Fiction Horizon called the black suit one of the evening’s standout moments.

Alba’s connection to Cruise goes back to ‘The Eye’, in which she starred and which Cruise produced. She was one of several people from his past projects who turned out to support him.

Others included ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Days of Thunder’ producer Jerry Bruckheimer, his ‘Collateral’ director Michael Mann, ‘The Mummy’ co-star Sofia Boutella and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ actor Greg Tarzan Davis.

The cast was out in force. Cruise joined co-stars Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, Emma D’Arcy and Michael Stuhlbarg, along with Iñárritu and producer Mary Parent.

Kirsten Dunst, who attended with her husband Plemons, wore a black dress with contrasting light trim and pale blue heels. Kerry Condon, Miles Caton and Jared Hess were also among the guests.

Cruise, 64, wore a dark Armani suit with an open-collar shirt. He stopped to greet fans, posing for selfies and signing autographs for several hours as the crowd chanted his name.

‘Digger’ is a satirical comedy in which Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, an ambitious oil tycoon racing to prove himself as a disaster he created threatens the world. Iñárritu directed from a script he co-wrote with Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone and Sabina Berman, and the film was shot entirely in VistaVision.

It opens in theaters and IMAX across North America on October 2. Early reception has been mixed, with DiscussingFilm arguing that Cruise’s wild energy keeps an uneven story moving even if the script feels hollow at times.

Between the cast, the collaborators and the giant shovel, the premiere became one of the biggest red carpet nights of the season. Alba’s understated black suit gave it a sleek counterpoint to the film’s madcap tone.

The night also underlined Cruise’s loyalty to the people he has worked with, a theme that has run through his premieres for years.
