Witches, warlocks and a very dangerous New Orleans boarding school are about to take over Thursday night television. ‘Coven Academy‘ premieres October 1 on Freeform at 8 p.m. If you have been waiting to see what Disney’s darker teen soap looks like in action, the wait is basically over.

The new series comes from a creator with a clear love for the genre. It draws inspiration from nineties teen dramas and supernatural favorites including ‘Dawson’s Creek,’ ‘Hocus Pocus,’ ‘Practical Magic,’ ‘The Craft’ and ‘Charmed.’ Here is everything you need to know about the release schedule, where to stream and what to expect from ‘Coven Academy’ before the first chapter hits.

‘Coven Academy’ Release Date and Chapter Schedule

This is not a traditional TV season. The first season is made up of 21 short chapters instead of the usual hour long episodes. The format is built to be bingeable, with fast paced chapters designed to pull viewers deeper into the story.

On Freeform, those chapters arrive in three weekly blocks. Nine chapters debut on October 1, six follow on October 8 and the final six land on October 15. Rotten Tomatoes lists the same rollout, with the last chapters on October 15 centering on a winter solstice celebration that brings danger.

There is also a small piece of behind the scenes history worth knowing. The series was originally slated for Disney Channel before it was moved to Freeform ahead of the teaser trailer release. That shift fits the older and moodier tone the show is going for.

What Time Does ‘Coven Academy’ Premiere?

Mark your calendar for primetime. The series premieres Thursday, October 1 at 8 p.m. ET and PT. That works out to 8 p.m. Eastern and 7 p.m. Central.

Viewers who tune in live will get the opening block of nine chapters in one sitting. More chapters follow on the linear schedule on October 8, with the season finale airing on October 15. That gives the show a proper weekly water cooler rhythm for anyone who still loves appointment viewing.

Where to Watch ‘Coven Academy’?

Freeform is the home base for the premiere. The show airs on Freeform and also streams on Disney+, Hulu and Freeform on Demand. The full season arrives the next day, October 2, so streamers can watch it all at once.

That means you can choose your own pace. One writer covering the show admitted that nostalgia for weekly releases made them want to catch it live on Freeform and stretch the story out. Others will likely prefer to burn through the whole season in a single weekend.

Disney is clearly treating this as a seasonal event. The October launch positions ‘Coven Academy’ as one of the company’s flagship Halloween season titles across both cable and streaming.

‘Coven Academy’ Preview and Cast

The setup is classic teen drama with a magical twist. The story follows three teenage witches and their dangerously charming warlock peers at an elite magic boarding school in New Orleans where power is currency, secrets are lethal and attraction is a liability. Newcomer Briar learns the academy houses troubled teen girls and is one of several coven institutions designed to hone misunderstood powers.

The vibe is intentionally grown up. The series was designed to feel older and darker than traditional Disney Channel programming, with mature themes, contemporary music and a more cinematic style. The teaser trailer is set to Olivia Rodrigo’s hit song ‘Brutal’ and hints at tension within the coven, fueled by the mystery of Briar’s past and the dangerous desires of Jake.

The cast blends rising talent with familiar faces. Malina Weissman plays Briar, Tiffani Thiessen is Miss Graves, Malachi Barton is Jake, Louis Thresher is Ollie, Jordan Leftwich is Sasha and Ora Duplass is Tegan. Devon Sawa also joins the faculty.

Behind it all is Tim Federle, who knows how to make a Disney teen hit. He told Teen Vogue the pilot was the easiest thing he had written in a long time because there was no existing property to live up to, and he pitched the show as a love letter to the young adult series he grew up on. Not everyone is on board, as the conservative group One Million Moms has already warned parents about the witchcraft themes. So after Briar’s first night in Crescent Veil, do you think this new coven can stand beside ‘Charmed’ and ‘The Craft’ or is the school’s darker side already too much?
