Freeform’s newest supernatural drama is finally here, and viewers are already wondering how long the magic will last. ‘Coven Academy‘ premieres Thursday, October 1 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, and the network has timed it to kick off spooky season.

The big question for fans is whether ‘Coven Academy’ will return for more. At the time of writing, the coverage available describes this only as a first season, and no renewal announcement has surfaced. Here is where the series stands, plus the release time, streaming details and a preview of what awaits.

‘Coven Academy’ Season 2 Status

Talk of a second season may be premature, since the show is only just arriving. Episode guides list a single season of 10 episodes with a 30 minute run time. Nothing in the reporting gathered so far points to a renewal, so any follow up would depend on how audiences respond.

Freeform has made quick renewal calls before. ‘Shadowhunters’ premiered in January 2016 and was renewed for a second season in March of that year. That series is a relevant comparison because Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer were among its showrunners, and both also serve as executive producers on ‘Coven Academy’.

The road to the screen was a fairly steady one. Disney Branded Television handed the series an order on August 15, 2025, and the project has moved from pilot to premiere in a little over a year. If the early numbers are strong, a second season announcement could come sooner than fans expect.

‘Coven Academy’ Release Date and Time

The first episodes land tonight. The series debuts October 1 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Freeform as part of the network’s 31 Nights of Halloween. That makes it a perfect fit for the season, and for anyone who misses the cable broadcast, there is a streaming backup.

‘Coven Academy’ Release Date, Time, Trailer and Where to Watch

The live schedule is unusual. Freeform is splitting the broadcast into three chunks, with nine chapters on October 1, six more on October 8, and the final six on October 15. The season consists of 21 fast paced chapters, so they air more like three movies on Freeform.

The home for the show also shifted along the way. The series was originally planned for Disney Channel but was changed to Freeform after the teaser trailer arrived. Given the darker material, the move makes a lot of sense.

Where to Watch ‘Coven Academy’?

Viewers have plenty of options. The full season will be available the next day on Disney+, Hulu and Freeform on Demand, which means a complete binge is possible starting October 2. The streaming release skips the three part broadcast and hands you the complete season in one go.

Not everyone is thrilled about the binge model. TV Fanatic argued in its own analysis that the show is the perfect fit for Freeform but would work better airing weekly. It is a fair point, since a weekly rollout tends to keep fan theories and social chatter alive for longer.

The network’s audience should feel at home either way. One outlet compared the series to Freeform’s ‘Motherland: Fort Salem’, while another said it gives The CW vibes in the best possible way.

‘Coven Academy’ Preview and Cast

The premise is pure teen supernatural catnip. In the haunted heart of New Orleans, the series follows three teenage witches and their dangerously charming warlock peers at an elite magic boarding school. Caught between ancient supernatural wars and forbidden love interests, the coven must decide how far they will go to protect their city.

The cast is led by a trio of young stars. Malina Pauli Weissman plays Briar, a young woman who discovers she is a witch, alongside Jordan Leftwich as the mind reading Sasha and Ora Duplass as the time bending Tegan. Malachi Barton plays the magnetic warlock Jake, Louis Thresher is the newly turned vampire Ollie, and Tiffani Amber Thiessen plays the formidable Miss Graves.

The trailer promises plenty of drama. It teases secrets, vampires and a love triangle already brewing, while the earlier teaser, set to Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Brutal,’ first introduced Briar, Jake and the rest of the coven. Creator Tim Federle is the mind behind the series, and now that the Briar, Jake and Ollie triangle is about to unfold, which side are you on, and is it enough to convince Freeform to bring the coven back for a second season?
