Ever since ‘Transformers’ in 2007, fans have been campaigning for Megan Fox to join the Marvel or DC universe. That hasn’t happened yet, but the actress has now slipped into a superhero-style suit of her own. The twist is that it is for a commercial, not a blockbuster.

Fox, now 40, has played robots and demons on screen. Her latest role is something else entirely: the face of a high-profile ad campaign that takes a famously awkward subject and treats it as a punchline and a conversation starter at the same time.

Fox has a starring role in a new ad campaign from telehealth company Ro. Wearing a skintight red suit, she portrays herself as the human embodiment of the erectile dysfunction product Ro Sparks. Her mission is to get people talking about the problem and seeking help to remedy it.

Ro co-founder and chief product officer Saman Rahmanian explained the thinking to, saying that “That’s where the stigma lives and that’s where it has to be challenged.” He added that Fox has signed a long-term deal to serve as a sort of brand ambassador and could be part of the company’s advertising for the next one to two years.

The campaign is titled “Megan Fox Is Ro Sparks” and marks the first celebrity campaign for Ro’s compounded ED pill. It launched on Thursday across linear TV, streaming and paid social. There is also an out-of-home component, with a Times Square takeover and tear-away posters across New York City starting October 5.

In the spots, Fox speaks in the first person in a sultry voice, describing the active ingredients and intended effects of the product. She does not cite studies or personal experience with ED. Ro Sparks is a compound that contains sildenafil and tadalafil, the active ingredients in Viagra and Cialis, and it dissolves under the tongue.

According to Ro, it begins working in about 15 minutes on average and can stay active for up to 36 hours. The compounded medication itself is not approved by the FDA, although both ingredients are. The ad also leans on double entendres, including a joke that the product shows up at your door and a nod to its discreet packaging.

The decision to center a woman was deliberate. Ro says its research found that men are most receptive to ED messaging when it comes from a woman. Fox has said ED can affect both people in a relationship, and that women should be visible in the conversation because they are affected too.

Rahmanian said that Fox was excited about what the campaign could do for couples, pointing to its impact on intimacy and confidence. That framing gives the tongue-in-cheek approach a more serious purpose.

Fox told People that she feels she was born for the role. She argued that a topic that already feels heavy should not be made heavier, so it might as well be fun. She also admitted she had expected to push the creators to go bolder, and instead found herself asking them to dial back some of the innuendo.

The approach differs from Ro’s earlier celebrity partnerships. Serena Williams, Charles Barkley, Trisha Paytas and Chrissy Metz all spoke about their personal experiences with Ro in recent campaigns. Fox, by contrast, is cast as the product personified.

The stakes are big for the company. Ro has been selling Sparks for two years, and the Fox partnership is its largest ED campaign ever and likely the category’s largest, according to Rahmanian. The ad debuted during NBC and Peacock’s coverage of the MLB Wild Card series.

Competition is fierce. Rivals such as Hims & Hers have emerged, and both Ro and Hims & Hers ran commercials during the most recent Super Bowl. Variety notes that the Fox spot shows how much more direct pharmaceutical advertisers have become when tackling sensitive conditions.

Whether it helps people talk more openly about ED remains to be seen. Either way, Fox in a red suit has certainly gotten people’s attention.

What do you think of Megan Fox’s unexpected campaign?
