Netflix’s Turkish Nanny Thriller Is Exploding Worldwide, and the Numbers Show Why

Netflix has made Turkish storytelling a core pillar of its international strategy. Its 2026 Turkish slate keeps expanding, and the platform has already seen big wins from the region, including ‘Old Money’, which was quickly renewed for a second season. A new thriller from Istanbul is now trying to join that club.

The series takes a familiar fear and gives it a fresh spin. A new mother who wants to return to her career hires a nanny, and the seemingly perfect help soon brings hidden tensions into the household. MovieWeb describes it as a new twist on ‘The Hand That Rocks the Cradle’, the 1992 thriller about an unhinged nanny who infiltrates a loving home.

The show is ‘Not a Stranger’, and it is turning into one of Netflix’s most surprising hits of the season. The series has broken into Netflix top 10 lists around the world and saw a huge 110% rise in viewing hours in its second week. The outlet called it one of the biggest series launches ever from the region.

The rollout started strong. Released on September 17, it entered the Top 10 in 62 countries. In its first full week it ranked No. 2 on the Non-English TV chart with 4.6 million views and 31.1 million hours viewed.

Then it took off. For the week of September 21 to 27, Netflix’s own data put the series at No. 1 on the Non-English TV list with 9.7 million views and 65.7 million hours watched. That pushed ‘The Perfect Lie’, the previous No. 1, down to sixth place, and it brought the total to 14.3 million views across two weeks.

What’s on Netflix has analysis that puts the numbers in context. According to What’s on Netflix, the week 2 rise makes the show the most-watched Turkish series released on a Thursday based on data going back to 2022. It is also performing well against ‘Old Money’, which is considered one of the biggest titles from the region in quite some time.

The site also noted that the growth has few comparisons. Even ‘Thank You, Next’ season 1 only went from 3.6 million views in week 1 to 5.1 million views in week 2. Doubling viewership in a second week is rare, since most shows lose audience after their first weekend.

The momentum is visible in individual markets, too. The series ranks No. 1 on Netflix’s list of the most popular shows in Türkiye, and it has also climbed to No. 4 on the Top 10 TV shows chart in the United States.

At the center of the story is Funda, played by Elçin Sangu, an artist and new mom who is desperate to return to painting. She hires Nazlı, played by Melis Sezen, to care for her daughter Mavi. Ozan Dolunay plays İlker, Funda’s husband, and the arrival of the nanny soon changes both their lives.

The series was directed by Mert Baykal, who made ‘Fi’, and written and created by Tuğba Doğan. It is an original story rather than a book adaptation, which means there is no novel ending for fans to peek at. Bombon Studios produced it, and each of the eight episodes runs about 50 minutes.

Still, the viewing figures suggest the story is connecting. The domestic setting, the trust issues around childcare and the slow reveal of secrets give the series a premise that doesn’t need much translation. That likely helps explain how it crossed borders so easily.

There is no word yet on what comes next. As of September 26, Netflix had not announced a renewal, and its title page lists only the first season. If the second-week surge is any guide, the question may not be whether Netflix wants more, but how soon.

What’s the biggest reason you’d watch Not a Stranger?
