‘Coven Academy’ Premiere Recap & Ending Explained: Briar’s Big Reveal and the Vampire Twist, Explained
The latest ‘Coven Academy’ premiere recap starts with a school that does not want to be found. Created by Tim Federle, the man behind ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’, the new supernatural dramedy debuted Oct. 1 on Freeform at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The full run hit Disney+ and Hulu the next day.
The series was originally intended for Disney’s streaming and channel lineup before landing on Freeform. It stars Malina Weissman, Tiffani Thiessen, Malachi Barton, Louis Thresher, Jordan Leftwich and Ora Duplass, with Devon Sawa in a supporting role as Mr. Cole. Early reviewers have noted that it feels much more young adult than typical Disney fare.
Reviewers have also been quick to compare it to ‘American Horror Story: Coven’, and Popped argues the setup is very familiar, with a New Orleans school full of young witches and a headmistress who has some Cordelia about her. That makes the premiere’s final moments all the more interesting, because they turn a witch-school story into a vampire-stalking thriller.
The premiere opens with 3 young witches attacked by vampires as they head back to their academy. Newspapers have been reporting the “random attacks” for a while, and by sunrise the girls are missing. Briar Roberts (Weissman), a Brooklyn teen grieving her mother’s death, arrives in the city believing she has been sent to Crescent Veil, a school for troubled girls.
Crescent Veil is actually the cover name for Coven Academy. Headmistress Miss Graves (Thiessen) already knows about Briar’s anger issues and her habit of snooping through police files for answers about her mom. When Graves says the wrong thing, objects on her desk begin to shake, and it becomes clear Briar’s powers are waking up.
Meet the Coven: Tegan, Sasha and a Warlock in Trouble
Briar tries to flee, but Tegan (Duplass) catches up and tells her she is a witch and is now being hunted. Tegan has time-bending abilities that leave her exhausted, while Sasha (Leftwich) can read emotions and cannot read Briar at all, which makes her suspicious. Graves promises answers about Briar’s mother, but only if she trains first.
Meanwhile, the warlocks are hunting the vampires. Jake (Barton) casts a powerful locator spell to find out whether the missing girls are alive, and he blames himself because he was with them the night they vanished. McKenna (Swayam Bhatia) warns him he is close to another suspension, and she does not trust the new girl.
The premiere’s final scene is where the twist lands. Briar’s cab driver from earlier, who returned her backpack and asked her out, turns out to be a new vampire named Ollie (Thresher). The vampire Alexander (Brendon Tremblay) rips out a man’s heart and hands it to a woman in charge, who writes Briar’s name in blood on a brick wall and orders Alexander to find her.
Alexander pushes back and says Ollie should be the one to deal with Briar. That reveals Briar is already a target, and the boy she is flirting with may be the one sent to get close to her. Screen Rant notes that a love triangle between Briar, Jake and Ollie begins almost immediately, so the danger and the romance are tangled together from the start.

The big open question is what Graves knows about Briar’s mother, and why vampires appear to want Briar specifically. Popped reports the season runs 21 short chapters, roughly 300 minutes in total, with nearly every chapter ending on a twist or cliffhanger. The same review says the final stretch ties up the main mystery while leaving room for another season.
The soundtrack is also getting attention. Popped lists Olivia Rodrigo, Sienna Spiro, Lady Gaga and KATSEYE among the artists featured, which fits the show’s teenage-rage energy.
Briar is being hunted, and Ollie may have been sent to get close to her. Will romance change his loyalties, or is he playing her all along?
