Paramount has had a difficult year at the box office, and a well-reviewed survival thriller was supposed to offer a reason for optimism. ‘Heart of the Beast,’ directed by David Ayer and starring Brad Pitt, arrived on Sept. 25 with strong notices and a big-name cast. The question was whether audiences would turn out for a man-and-his-dog story in a crowded fall calendar.

The opening was modest. The film earned $20 million domestically and $30.1 million from 63 international markets for a $50.1 million worldwide start, against a reported budget of $82 million. Its opening Friday brought in $7.4 million, and tracking had pointed to a range between $14 million and $20 million.

Now the second weekend is telling a more encouraging story. Box office analyst Luiz Fernando reports that the PG-13 actioner grossed a strong $3.2 million on its second Friday, a drop of just 58.2% from its opening Friday. He credits strong word of mouth, which is doing its job for the film.

Fernando compared that hold to several recent action titles. ‘Dog’ fell 51.2% to $2.5 million on its second Friday, while ‘The Beekeeper’ dropped 63.9% to $2.4 million, ‘The Running Man’ fell 74.6% to $1.7 million and ‘Ad Astra’ dropped 58.4% to $3 million. ‘Heart of the Beast’ sits near the top of that group.

The film now has a $30.5 million domestic total. Fernando is eyeing a second three-day weekend of $11 million to $13 million, which would be a drop between 35% and 45%. JoBlo’s weekend update has it on track for about $11 million, a 45% decline, and a $38 million domestic total.

The audience data helps explain the hold. Moviegoers gave the film an A- CinemaScore, a rare grade for a thriller, and its Rotten Tomatoes audience score has sat around 95%. Critics also responded warmly, with an 87% score at last count, and Comic Basics noted that it is among the best-reviewed films of Ayer’s career.

The story is straightforward but emotional. Pitt plays James Belmont, a retired veteran who survives an Alaskan plane crash with his trusted combat dog, and the two face a brutal 58-mile trek to safety. J.K. Simmons and Anna Lambe co-star, and the dog, Odin, has been singled out as a scene-stealer.

The film also reunites Pitt with Ayer, who directed him in the 2014 war drama ‘Fury,’ which grossed $211.8 million worldwide. Ayer is better known for gritty urban violence and for ‘The Beekeeper,’ which makes the tender survival tone a notable pivot.

The competition this weekend has been fierce. Tom Cruise’s ‘Digger’ and Anne Hathaway’s ‘Verity’ both opened, and ‘Resident Evil’ remains in the top tier, but ‘Heart of the Beast’ is holding its ground. A lighter drop than most of its peers suggests moviegoers who tried it are recommending it.

With an $82 million budget, the film still has a long way to go. But a strong second weekend, an A- grade and warm audience reaction give Paramount something it has not had much of this year, a well-liked movie that is building momentum.

What do you think of Heart of the Beast holding strong in its second weekend?
