The live-action ‘Naruto‘ movie has spent years in development limbo, but momentum is finally building. Lionsgate officially brought in Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,’ to write and direct the adaptation in February 2024.

Since then, the project has moved steadily forward. Cretton, who also directed ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ is co-writing the script with Tasha Huo, and creator Masashi Kishimoto has given the project his approval. A global casting search for Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura began on July 9, and filming is expected to start in the first half of 2027.

Now a new batch of reported details is circulating. Geek Vibes Nation on X, citing @DanielRPK, says the movie adapts the Land of Waves arc, with ‘Naruto: Mission to the Land of Waves’ being considered as the title. The post also claims the main characters remain 12 to 13 years old.

That lines up with a separate rumor from Knight Edge Media, which describes the film as a faithful adaptation of the arc with some changes. The outlet also claims the movie will be a hard PG-13, with plenty of swearing and Marvel-style humor, and that production begins in early 2027 in the United Kingdom.

The arc is a natural starting point. It is the first story of the manga and sees Team 7 head out on its first major mission, escorting a bridge builder named Tazuna while facing the rogue ninja Zabuza and his ally Haku. It ends with Haku’s death, one of the series’ most memorable early moments.

Live-Action ‘Naruto’ Plot Reportedly Revealed: A Dangerous First Mission and a Literal Demon

The most eye-catching claims involve the main trio. Sakura is reportedly more powerful from the start and already has her abilities, while Naruto has a strong interest in ninja history. Sasuke reportedly has feelings for Sakura, while Naruto does not.

Sakura’s backstory is also said to be different. She reportedly comes from wealth, her father died in Kurama’s attack, and her mother is portrayed as snobbish.

The biggest shift involves Naruto’s power. According to the post, becoming a Jinchuriki requires a specific bloodline, and Naruto inherits his mother’s, making him the only viable host for Kurama as she is dying. Knight Edge Media similarly says the Uzumaki clan is known for special blood tied to becoming a Jinchuriki in the Leaf Village.

A reported plot synopsis from a separate insider paints a similar picture. It says the mission becomes far more dangerous than anyone expects, forcing Naruto to confront his inner demons, including the literal demon behind his power.

None of this is official. Lionsgate hasn’t published this plot, and the official ‘Naruto’ site currently confirms only the creative team and the worldwide casting search. Another report notes that the Land of Waves connection is still speculative, since the film could ultimately use an original story.

The reports also conflict on casting. One claims the characters are 12 to 13, while another says a casting call sought actors over 18, and there have been conflicting reports on the age range under consideration.

Cretton has offered a hint of his approach. Speaking to Rolling Stone, he said he feels very connected to Naruto, and his comments suggested a focus on the underdog story at the heart of the manga.

There is still no release date and no officially announced cast. Charles Melton is reportedly in final talks to play Kakashi Hatake, but that hasn’t been confirmed by the studio.

The producing team is established, with Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Emmy Yu of Arad Productions joining Cretton and Jeyun Munford of Hisako. Until Lionsgate says more, fans are left weighing the leaked changes against what they love about the original story.

What do you think of the reported changes to Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura in the live-action movie?
