Lee Child Reveals Why He Vetoed a Third Tom Cruise ‘Jack Reacher’ Movie
Jack Reacher has had two very different lives on screen. Tom Cruise played the drifter in 2 feature films, ‘Jack Reacher‘ in 2012 and ‘Jack Reacher: Never Go Back’ in 2016. Today the character is better known as the muscle-bound star of Prime Video’s ‘Reacher’, played by Alan Ritchson.
The film casting was controversial from the start. Fans of Lee Child’s novels objected because the books describe Reacher as 6 ft 5 in and about 250 pounds, while Cruise is 5 ft 7 in. Even so, the first film was a hit that gave the character far more exposure than the books alone had.
So why did the movie series stop at 2? According to Deadline, Child has explained why he “vetoed” a third Tom Cruise movie and calls the Prime Video series a “fabulous luxury”.
Child told Collider in an exclusive interview ahead of his new novel ‘Chain Reaction’ that his original movie contract included a clause. After 2 films he had the right to decide whether any more would be made, and he used it. The deal was signed in 2005.
By the time the second film was done, Child said, the industry had changed. Binge television had arrived, and platforms like Amazon had the resources to tell stories in long form. He singled out running time as the big appeal of television, calling it “fabulous luxury” and noting that a series can run as long as the story needs.
Money was the other factor. Child said a studio film is a huge bet that depends on a movie star, while on television the platform pays the bill and the star doesn’t have to be a draw. That left the production a completely free hand for casting, even with total unknowns.
That freedom led to Ritchson. ‘Reacher’ premiered on Prime Video in 2022 with him in the lead role, and the series became one of the streamer’s biggest successes. Season 3 reached 54.6M viewers in its first 19 days.
The show’s future looks secure. Season 4, based on ‘Gone Tomorrow’, premiered on August 12 and ended on September 16. That same day the spin-off ‘Neagley’, centered on Maria Sten’s Frances Neagley, debuted.
Prime Video has renewed ‘Reacher’ for a fifth season, and a sixth season was confirmed in September, according to Tribune. Deadline notes that ‘Neagley’ has also been renewed for season 2. Child is an executive producer on the main series.
The author is also still writing. ‘Chain Reaction’, the 31st Jack Reacher novel, is due on October 20, written with his brother Andrew Child. It brings back Susan Turner, who last appeared in ‘Never Go Back’.

The news lands in a rough week for Cruise at the box office. His new film ‘Digger’ opened to $8M this weekend, his lowest opening in 19 years. His 2 Reacher films remain his only big-screen adaptations of the character.
Cruise’s two movies are not forgotten, though. Child has said the films gave Reacher exposure he never dreamed of, and the decision to stop at 2 was about format rather than regret. Fans may never know what a third film would have looked like.
For many readers, the veto is now a happy accident, since it opened the door to the Prime Video series.
