James Gunn Is Already Writing His Next Movie While ‘Man of Tomorrow’ Heads Into Post-Production
It is hard to find a busier person in Hollywood than James Gunn. As co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, he oversees the entire DC Universe slate while also writing and directing its biggest films. His workload reportedly includes 18-hour days while overseeing the Superman sequel.
That sequel, ‘Man of Tomorrow’, wrapped principal photography after 93 shooting days, and Gunn announced it on Threads with crew photos. The film is the fourth in the DCU and a follow-up to 2025’s ‘Superman’. It is due in theaters on July 9, 2027, which leaves roughly 9 months for post-production and visual effects.
The cast is a big one. David Corenswet returns as Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Edi Gathegi and Skyler Gisondo. Newcomer Lars Eidinger plays Brainiac, while Milly Alcock returns as Supergirl and Adria Arjona joins as Maxima. Gunn has described the story as one where Lex and Superman must work together against a much bigger threat.
You might expect Gunn to take a break once the cameras stop rolling.
In the Threads exchange, a fan asked whether he was ready to write his next film or not quite yet. Gunn replied that he is already in it, adding that he needed something to do while waiting for the assembly. The assembly is the first rough cut of a film, so the reply suggests Gunn is using the downtime on ‘Man of Tomorrow’ to start a new script.

Gunn did not say which project he is writing, and DC Film News ended its post by asking fans what they think it is. The DCU slate offers some clues but no answers. DC Studios has ‘The Authority’ and ‘The Brave and the Bold’ listed without release dates, and other projects are in development.
The slate is already crowded. ‘Supergirl’ arrived in June, and ‘Clayface’ follows on October 23. ‘Lanterns’ wraps its first season tonight on HBO. After ‘Man of Tomorrow’, Gunn has confirmed that the animated ‘The People v. Gorilla Grodd’ will be the second DCU release in continuity, and ‘Creature Commandos’ season 2 is not far behind.
Then there is the other side of DC. ‘The Batman: Part II’ arrives on October 1, 2027, 3 months after ‘Man of Tomorrow’. Gunn has also said he is supporting the Batman 2 crew to make sure it goes smoothly.
This is hardly a new pattern. In mid-2025, Gunn said he was pre-writing his next DC Studios project even as he handled post-production on ‘Superman’ and ‘Peacemaker’. By August 2025 he had finished the treatment for the next story in what he calls the Superman Saga.
He also wrote all of ‘Peacemaker’ season 2 while serving as co-CEO. The approach lets DC Studios keep its release calendar moving, since scripts are ready before cameras roll.
It also matters because the DCU needs momentum. One analysis described ‘Man of Tomorrow’ as a bellwether for the franchise, after what it called a divisive start. The film is also described as the DCU’s first crossover event and a stepping stone toward the Justice League.
Which DC project do you think James Gunn is writing next?
