‘Marshals’ Season 2 Episode 1 Recap & Ending Explained: Why Dolly’s Fate Changes Everything for Kayce

Few spinoffs have had to clean up as many loose ends as ‘Marshals‘ did when it came back to CBS. The ‘Marshals’ premiere ending resolves nearly every cliffhanger in one hour, and it costs Kayce Dutton dearly.

The Season 1 finale aired May 24, and the new season premiered on October 4 with the episode “All Hat No Cattle.” That was a quick turnaround for a show that averaged 19.3 million multiplatform viewers per episode in its first season, becoming the #1 new show of the year.

Season 1 ended with Tate leaving for a bass fishing trip with Tom Weaver. The premiere confirms that trip was a kidnapping. It ends with Dolly Weaver dead, Tate rescued, and Kayce left with a victory he cannot celebrate.

While Kayce is on a date with Tom’s daughter Dolly, a lawyer arrives at East Camp and tells him Tate is being held hostage until Kayce agrees to sell his land. In true Dutton fashion, Kayce kills the lawyer and the armed men with him, then takes Dolly hostage.

Dolly insists she had nothing to do with it and proves it by helping Kayce arrange an exchange on Tom’s land in Wyoming. Kayce signs the paper, but Tom reveals he never intended to let father and son walk away. He planned to kill Tate and make it look like an accident, then kill Kayce and claim self-defense.

The premiere also settles the other big question from last season. Belle and Cal survive the ambush with minor injuries.

Kayce escapes as Weaver’s men attack, just as the Marshals arrive. Dolly Weaver dies when her father Tom crashes the vehicle they are using to escape the Marshals, and Tom survives. Kayce then chooses to leave Tom alive with his loss.

Showrunner Spencer Hudnut told TheWrap that Tom needed to pay the ultimate price, and that watching his daughter die was “the worst punishment that we could give to him.” Hudnut also called it the hardest episode of the series to break, because the writers had painted themselves into a corner.

Not everyone is sold. One reviewer worries that Kayce losing another woman he cares about risks becoming a cruel narrative habit.

The hour packs in a river fight, a horse chase and a helicopter. Kayce kills Tom’s henchman Jeb and brings Tate out alive, before his composure finally breaks when he finds a photograph of his late wife Monica with their son.

Luke Grimes told Collider that the river fight was the biggest challenge of the shoot. He also described the character plainly: “Kayce is just a ball of trauma.”

Hudnut has said this season turns Kayce’s attention to his own son turning 18 and becoming a man. He added that Tate will react to nearly losing his life in ways that alarm Kayce.

Two smaller moments close out the episode. Rather than return to Washington, Andrea stays with the team because she has never had teammates who fight for one another like these marshals do.

Belle insists on going with Cal to his oncology appointment in Salt Lake City, and the episode closes with Cal carefully tending to her injuries. After the kiss in Season 1, it is clear those feelings have not gone away.

Reviews were mixed. Collider’s critic thought quickly wrapping up that cliffhanger was wise, leaving the door open for new material. Screen Rant felt the episode was a reminder of how lethal Kayce can be, though the ending leaves untapped storytelling potential.

Fans hoping for a ‘Dutton Ranch’ crossover were disappointed. SlashFilm noted that Kayce takes his trip to Wyoming without the aid of his ‘Yellowstone’ alums. The season is set to run 20 episodes, so there is plenty of time for the fallout to play out.

Dolly’s death was devastating — but it made sense for the story
