‘Tracker’ Season 4 Episode 1 Recap & Ending Explained: What Colter Shaw’s Port Rescue Sets Up Next

Every season of ‘Tracker‘ starts the same way, with someone in trouble and Colter Shaw the only person willing to help for little or no money. This year’s opener sticks to that formula, but the ‘Tracker’ premiere ending leaves a few threads dangling.

The CBS drama returned on October 4 at a special 9:30 p.m. time slot, after being renewed for a fourth season in January 2026. The premiere, titled “Safe Harbor,” takes Colter to Los Angeles, where a missing-person case snowballs into something much bigger.

By the end, a teenager’s lie has led Colter to a human trafficking operation at the Port of Los Angeles. Colter shuts the case down and brings the missing father home, but not everything is tied up.

Charlie finds Colter on Reddit and says his brother is missing, though the person he needs found is actually his father, Sean. He fears that admitting his dad has vanished could bring child services into the home and separate him from his younger brother, Hank. Their mother died two years ago.

Colter sees through the story and takes the case anyway, even though it’s clear he won’t get paid much. The trail leads to Bern Maddox, who admits he sold Sean a gun to protect his girlfriend, Stephanie Rodriguez, a supervisor at the port.

A crime scene then turns up a dead man: Brent, Stephanie’s ex. Detective Bill Kao believes Sean killed him, but Colter concludes someone else killed Brent and kidnapped both Sean and Stephanie.

Colter’s hunch proves right when CCTV footage shows Sean and Stephanie being forced into a vehicle registered to Cabrillo Transport. Colter sneaks onto the shipyard on the underside of an 18-wheeler, takes out an employee, locates Sean and pulls him out.

He then goes after the guys holding Stephanie in the yard. Several people at the port had come expecting jobs, and the police tell Colter the victims will return to their families.

The case isn’t completely closed. Reenie learns a Russian organization was involved, and nothing in the episode indicates the group is gone.

Colter tells Charlie to study hard, get a job, succeed in life and find him someday. It reads less like settling a debt and more like an opening for the teenager to learn the ins and outs of the job.

The parallel is obvious. Colter was around Charlie’s age when he lost his father and had to care for his younger sister, Dory. He also commends Charlie on his good instincts, and the recap has Charlie reminding him of a young Colter.

Away from the port, Reenie’s in-house investigator Adam Shevlin (Michael Malarkey) turns out to be the man who asked about her. When a colleague tries to talk him up, Reenie stops him, hinting at a complicated history.

The episode also shows Colter flipping through a dog-eared notebook of cases, with one page ending in “WHOSE CAR WAS IT?” That may be the season-long mystery showrunner Elwood Reid has teased. He told TVLine the plan is to “have him take on a few more scars.”

Colter’s brother, Russell (Jensen Ackles), is also in the background. He agreed to a shady job in exchange for keeping Colter in the dark about something their father did to him as a kid.

Reid also confirmed that Teddi, Velma and Bobby won’t return, telling Screen Rant, “The story kind of moved past that a little bit.” Instead, the focus is on resetting the office around Reenie, Mel and Randy.

Critics were divided. TV Fanatic called the hour familiar and not particularly groundbreaking, while another Screen Rant critic argued the episode barely nods to the third season finale. Collider’s critic saw it differently, promising fans of the old formula a delight, and one outlet noted that ‘Marshals’ has since dethroned ‘Tracker’ in the ratings.

Did the Tracker Season 4 premiere strike the right balance?
