Playing a real person is one thing. Standing next to them on a red carpet is another. Biopics and true-story dramas tend to save their most memorable moments for premiere night, when the cast comes face to face with the people they’ve been portraying

‘The Social Reckoning’ is Aaron Sorkin’s return to the world of Facebook. The film is a companion piece to ‘The Social Network’, which arrived in theaters 16 years ago, and it dramatizes the 2021 Facebook leak by whistleblower Frances Haugen and Jeff Horwitz.

At the film’s New York premiere on October 4, that real-life meeting happened in front of the cameras. In a video shared by Variety, stars Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White posed with Haugen and Horwitz, the real people they play. The clip has racked up hundreds of thousands of views on X within hours.

Madison wore a floor-length silver gown, while White wore a navy suit. Horwitz wore a grey suit, and Haugen wore a white top with a black skirt.

The U.S. premiere was held at the Regal Union Square, after earlier premiere screenings in London and Paris. Sorkin and much of the cast, including Jeremy Strong, Wunmi Mosaku and Betty Gilpin, attended the New York event.

Madison plays Haugen, a young Facebook engineer, and White plays Horwitz, the Wall Street Journal reporter she enlists to help blow the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets. Strong takes over the role of Mark Zuckerberg, which Jesse Eisenberg played in ‘The Social Network’. The cast also includes Billy Magnussen and Bill Burr.

Haugen leaked thousands of pages of internal Facebook records to the Journal, which led to the 2021 investigation known as the Facebook Files. The series of stories alleged the company prioritized profits over safety and hid its own research from investors and the public.

Sorkin, who won an Oscar for writing ‘The Social Network’, now writes and directs, taking over from David Fincher. The original film earned over $226 million globally in 2010 and eight Oscar nominations, including three wins.

In an Associated Press interview, Sorkin said he was originally reluctant to return to this world, wary of making a follow-up that failed. Meeting Haugen and Horwitz changed his mind. The film is described as a companion piece rather than a direct sequel.

The role marks Madison’s first since her Oscar win for ‘Anora’. She has said playing Haugen demanded what she calls an “intellectual transformation,” focusing less on physical resemblance and more on capturing Haugen’s mindset and emotional restraint.

That makes the red carpet pairing with Haugen all the more interesting. Madison has openly acknowledged she doesn’t physically resemble the whistleblower, so the photo gives fans a chance to compare the actress and the real person side by side.

The film opens in theaters on October 9 from Columbia Pictures. It’s rated R and runs 1 hour and 52 minutes.

Early footage, including the trailer, opened with a scene of Haugen speaking with Horwitz, setting up a tense story about the fallout of a global whistleblower case. With the premiere tour now complete, all that’s left is for audiences to see how Sorkin’s return to Facebook plays out.

Can The Social Reckoning live up to The Social Network?
