Anthony Mackie Insists Sam Wilson Is Still Captain America Even With Chris Evans Back in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
When Chris Evans’ return to the MCU was confirmed, it instantly became one of the biggest talking points surrounding ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Steve Rogers appeared to have closed the book on his story in ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and fans immediately started asking what role he would play in a world where Sam Wilson already carries the shield.
The first teaser, which arrived months ago, only fueled the debate. It showed Rogers riding a motorcycle up to a farmhouse, packing away his Captain America suit and cradling a newborn baby, before a title card read “Steve Rogers will return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.'” Marvel’s choice of words, naming Steve rather than Captain America, was widely read as a signal that Evans wouldn’t simply reclaim the title.
Now the man who currently wears the star-spangled costume has weighed in again. In an interview with Deadline’s Baz Bamigboye, Anthony Mackie spoke about Evans’ appearance in the film, and what he said adds a new wrinkle to the conversation.
Speaking to Deadline about the film, Mackie said Evans is coming back and reprising his role, but stressed, “I’m still Captain America.” He pointed to the comics, where Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson have fought side by side with both going by the Captain America name.
According to Mackie, Rogers returns simply because the heroes face a big opponent in the film. In other words, the return isn’t meant to push Sam out of the spotlight, but to bring in extra firepower.
The comments came during a conversation that was primarily about his upcoming return to Broadway to play Macbeth, his first stage appearance in 16 years. Mackie said the idea took hold while he was shooting ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ in London and talking theater with his friend and mentor Wendell Pierce.
The latest remarks follow an earlier clarification. After Marvel’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con in July, Mackie told Variety that Evans is returning as Steve Rogers rather than as Captain America, and he hinted that Rogers could take on the Nomad identity from the comics.
Taken together, the two interviews paint a consistent picture. Steve Rogers is back, but the film still treats Sam as the main Captain America, while leaving the details of Steve’s role under wraps.
That ambiguity is by design. Marvel has so far kept the specifics secret, and a later trailer showed Rogers reuniting with Thor, giving fans another glimpse without explaining his purpose.

Evans spent years insisting he was done with the role. He told Esquire early last year that he was happily retired and denied reports that he would return.
At CinemaCon this year, he said he had only wanted to come back if there was a genuine reason, and that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has one. The Russo brothers have also said they couldn’t imagine the story without the character, with Anthony Russo telling Empire that they can’t see the narrative without his central role.
Mackie has been openly happy about the reunion. At Comic-Con Málaga on October 3, he described the vibe when he, Evans and Sebastian Stan are together as a powwow, with the trio joking around and talking about what’s happening before getting back to work.
The film itself is enormous. Robert Downey Jr. plays Doctor Doom, and the cast brings together the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts, Wakanda and the X-Men. The Russos, who made the last two Avengers films, are back in the director’s chair, and the film arrives in theaters on December 18.
For Sam Wilson, the stakes are clear. Since taking up the shield at the end of ‘Endgame,’ he has carried the mantle through ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ and ‘Captain America: Brave New World,’ and some fans have worried that Steve’s return could overshadow him.
Mackie’s answer seems designed to calm those concerns. Whatever Steve does in the movie, Sam isn’t giving up the title.
How should Avengers: Doomsday handle Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson as Captain America?
