‘Tulsa King’ Renewed for Season 5 With a Surprise Move to New York
Sylvester Stallone has found a surprising second act on the small screen. As Dwight “The General” Manfredi, a New York mafia capo exiled to Oklahoma, he turned ‘Tulsa King’ into one of Paramount+’s signature hits.
The numbers back it up. A report noted the dramedy was Paramount’s most-watched original series in one recent year, with a record 21.1 million global streaming viewers for its season 2 premiere.
Now the show is making its biggest change yet. Deadline reported on October 5 that Paramount+ has renewed ‘Tulsa King’ for a fifth season, with the announcement arriving ahead of the fourth season premiere.
According to Deadline, New York replaces Atlanta as the filming location because the storyline will explore Dwight’s mafia roots. Drew Brown, an executive vice president at Paramount Television Studios, said the studio is “thrilled to bring fans even more of this incredible series.”
The move is a creative one, but it is also a practical one. Variety reports that a writers’ room for a potential fifth season opened in June with plans to relocate to New York, and that budgetary considerations played a role. The News International adds that New York’s tax incentives make it appealing for productions.
It is also a first for the Taylor Sheridan universe. This makes ‘Tulsa King’ the first Sheridan show to film a season in New York or Los Angeles, a notable change for a creator best known for heartland stories.
The show has been on the move before. The first season was largely filmed in Oklahoma City, while primary production on season 2 relocated to Atlanta after the cast and crew complained.
The cast is changing too. Stallone’s daughter, Scarlet Rose Stallone, who has played Spencer since the series debut, has been promoted to series regular, per CBR. TVLine reports that four newcomers are joining as series regulars: Erik Palladino of ‘ER,’ Glenn Fleshler of ‘Billions,’ Nickola Shreli of ‘Power Book IV: Force’ and Anthony Skordi of ‘Law & Order: Organized Crime.’

Stallone recently signed a new deal, similar to his arrangement for seasons 3 and 4, which helped clinch the renewal. Terence Winter, the first season’s showrunner, is back as head writer and executive producer for season 4, per TheWrap.
Season 4 itself is still to come. It premieres on October 16 on Paramount+, and its cast includes Martin Starr, Jay Will, Vincent Piazza, Annabella Sciorra, Frank Grillo, Neal McDonough, Garrett Hedlund and Dana Delany, with Gretchen Mol joining as a series regular, according to Mandatory.

The wider franchise is growing as well. A spinoff starring Samuel L. Jackson, called ‘Frisco King,’ is currently in production. That makes ‘Tulsa King’ only the second Sheridan series for Paramount+, aside from ‘Yellowstone,’ to expand into a franchise.
The renewal’s synopsis hints at where the story is headed. Each move drags Dwight deeper into the street instincts he left behind in New York, turning Tulsa into a battleground and Dwight into the one threat no one can afford to underestimate, according to Deadline.
After spending years building an empire far from home, the General is heading back to the city that made him. Old grudges, old allies and plenty of unfinished business are likely waiting there.
