Apple TV’s prestige thrillers have a habit of leaving viewers with more questions than answers. ‘Imperfect Women‘ arrived on the platform on March 18, 2026, with a premise that hooked audiences quickly: a murder that shatters the lives of three best friends.

The series was sold as a limited event, with the eight-episode thriller starring and executive produced by Emmy winners Kerry Washington and Elisabeth Moss. Yet the first season’s story was built on Araminta Hall’s novel, and the book’s ending seemed to leave little room for more.

That changed on October 5. Variety reported that Apple TV has renewed ‘Imperfect Women’ for a second season, with Washington returning to lead. According to the report, the new season will not follow the same three-friend structure, and will instead build an original story around Washington’s character, Eleanor.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that the renewal comes about five months after the first season concluded, and Deadline points out that the new season takes a spinoff-style approach by following one of the three title characters. Deadline also notes there is no second book, so season 2 has no source material to draw from.

The official logline offers the first hint of where the story is headed. It says Eleanor returns to her hometown roots in the affluent Black enclave of Martha’s Vineyard, only to find that beneath its idyllic surface lie secrets and scandals that threaten to upend everything she thought she knew about her past, according to Jingletree’s report on the Variety story.

Washington, speaking in a statement to Variety, said she is “so excited to step back into Eleanor’s shoes.” She added that she was thrilled to see how deeply the women and their stories resonated with audiences around the world.

Apple’s programming chief praised the first season as well. Matt Cherniss, Apple TV’s head of programming, said the streamer jumped at the chance to expand the world through Washington’s fan-favorite character, according to Variety.

There are creative changes behind the scenes too. Annie Weisman, who created the series and served as its showrunner in season 1, will return as co-showrunner alongside Justin Hillian. Hillian’s credits include ‘The Chi’ and ‘Snowfall.’

Season 1 ran for eight episodes and wrapped in April, per TheTVCave. It starred Washington as Eleanor, Moss as Mary and Kate Mara as Nancy, alongside Joel Kinnaman, Corey Stoll and Leslie Odom Jr.

Whether Moss and Mara will appear in the new season is not clear. AppleMagazine cautions that the first-season roles should not be read as confirmation of anyone’s return, and no other casting has been announced.

Washington will executive produce again through her Simpson Street banner alongside Pilar Savone. Moss will executive produce as well, and 20th Television and Apple Studios will produce.

No premiere date has been announced for season 2. For now, fans know only that Eleanor is heading home, and that home may hold a few secrets of its own.
