‘FBI’ Season 9 Episode 1 Premiere Recap & Ending Explained: OA’s Undercover Nightmare and That Legal Loophole
‘FBI‘ has been the backbone of CBS’s Dick Wolf lineup since it debuted in September 2018, following Special Agent Maggie Bell and her partner Omar Adom “OA” Zidan through the New York field office’s biggest cases. The Season 9 premiere arrived on Monday night with a major shake-up already in place, one that split that long-running partnership apart.
The hour also doubled as a mini-crossover event. ‘FBI’ aired at 8 p.m. ET, followed by the ‘CIA’ season premiere, and Necar Zadegan’s Nikki Reynard crossed over to lend a hand with the case.
The episode, titled “Rendition,” was written by Aaron Ginsburg and directed by Alex Chapple. It picks up 3 months after the Season 8 finale, with OA still deep undercover on Anna Vorpe’s strike team and Maggie adjusting to life without him.
OA’s fall at the end of last season was a ruse. He appeared to be fired from the FBI so that he could infiltrate Anna’s shadowy unit, played by Claire Coffee, and only a handful of people know the truth. Maggie now works alongside Isaiah Green, played by Roland Buck III, who is ADIC Green’s nephew and has replaced OA, and the two struggle to bond.
The case begins when a young traveler is found shot dead in a state park. The team learns she witnessed the execution of someone tied to a top-secret government project, and Jubal gets help from Nikki, who identifies it as Project Jehovah, a program financed through the Defense Department’s black budget. The murdered men are top nuclear scientists associated with the project.
Anna has her own interest in the case. She believes the project’s director, Cameron Koleo, leaked important information to North Korea, which puts her team on a collision course with the FBI, which is also searching for him.
Both sides meet at Koleo’s research facility, and the strike team simply takes him from the FBI. They then begin torturing him for information, a move that visibly shakes OA, who has seen the unit cover up civilian casualties before.
The investigation eventually shows that Koleo was not the leaker at all, since his girlfriend passed information to outside sources. Koleo takes his own life while in the team’s custody, which leaves OA devastated but also hopeful that the death of an innocent civilian will finally be enough to bring Anna down.

That hope doesn’t last. When OA brings the news to Isobel, she tells him that Anna’s team acted under a national security exemption, which means the abduction and the death are sanctioned. Anna and her unit are untouchable.
Isobel then orders him to stay undercover, since the team still doesn’t have enough evidence and needs to know who is protecting Anna. It is a bleak outcome for OA, who believed he was a step away from returning to 26 Fed.
Showrunner Mike Weiss told CinemaBlend that the toll comes from OA’s values, which include integrity, loyalty and adherence to the truth. None of that matters inside what Weiss calls “a shadowy, non-constitutionally bound unit.”

The emotional high point is the reunion between Maggie and OA, which begins with a long hug. To keep up the facade in the field, Maggie then makes him punch her, which shows how far she is willing to go to protect his cover.
OA also does not start well with Isaiah, and the two get into a fight. Their rocky start suggests the new partnership will need work.
Weiss also pointed out that Isobel is carrying a risky secret. Only Isobel and Maggie know what OA is really doing, and she is keeping it from Jubal, Scola and ADIC Green, and the longer the secret holds, the harder it gets to keep from a building full of agents who are known for finding the truth.
The strike team story is not wrapping up quickly. Collider reports that the arc spans multiple episodes, with darker stakes ahead before OA finds the light again.
Next week’s episode, “Omissions,” airs on October 12 and finds the agents investigating the murder of an undercover NYPD officer outside his daughter’s school. Maggie will also get to know her new partner while quietly helping OA.
How do you think OA's undercover mission will play out?
