John Cena has spent years moving between wrestling rings, action sets and comedies, and the former WWE star is now headlining a family adventure built on one of the most recognizable toy brands in the world. ‘Matchbox: The Movie’ is a live-action feature from Apple Original Films, Skydance Media and Mattel Studios, inspired by Mattel’s die-cast vehicle line.

Premiere nights for a movie like this tend to be a family affair, and Cena rarely arrives alone. His wife, Shay Shariatzadeh, has been at his side for premieres for years, including ‘Ricky Stanicky’ in March 2024, which was his second premiere of the year after ‘Argylle.’

This time, the couple’s carpet moment has fans talking. The cast attended the world premiere at the AMC Lincoln Square Theater in New York City on Monday night, October 5, and Cena walked the carpet with Shariatzadeh.

A short clip shared by Entertainment Tonight shows the pair standing close together while photographers and crew bustle around them. Cena wore a bold green plaid suit with a red pocket square, and Shariatzadeh wore a shimmering olive-green sequined gown with a high neckline and cap sleeves.

Online reaction was warm, with Entertainment Tonight teasing that the couple had its hearts racing. It is not the first time the two have charmed a red carpet, since Cena once credited a film set for bringing them together.

Cena was joined by co-stars Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Arturo Castro and Teyonah Parris. Biel wore a Dolce&Gabbana look, and her husband, Justin Timberlake, showed support by attending the premiere too, though he did not pose for photos on the red carpet.

The cast has been busy promoting the film. Apple also held a special screening in Mexico City with the same group of stars before the New York event.

Apple describes the film as an action-packed, globetrotting adventure about a group of childhood friends whose lives are upended when their long-absent former leader returns to their small town. That leader is Sean, an undercover CIA agent played by Cena, and he unwittingly drags the group into a frantic international pursuit to save the world.

The cast also includes Corey Stoll, Bill Camp, Danai Gurira and Golshifteh Farahani. Biel plays Aimee, Richardson plays Crosby, Castro plays Ted and Parris plays Charmaine, according to Apple’s listing.

Sam Hargrave, known for ‘Extraction’ and ‘Extraction II,’ directs the film from a screenplay by David Coggeshall, whose credits include ‘The Family Plan’ and ‘Orphan: First Kill.’ Producers include David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger for Skydance, along with Robbie Brenner and Ynon Kreiz for Mattel Films, and Jules Daly.

The brand behind the movie has a long history. Mattel says Matchbox die-cast cars have been around for more than 70 years, and that 2 cars are sold every second somewhere in the world. The name itself came about when a young girl’s school friends began asking for a matchbox car.

The film is rated PG-13 and has a runtime of 2 hours and 6 minutes, according to Apple’s listing. It premieres globally on Apple TV on Friday, October 9.

That means fans do not have long to wait. For now, the premiere has given them a sweet glimpse of Cena off screen before he returns to the spotlight as a globe-trotting CIA agent.
