Teyonah Parris has built a career on versatility, moving from prestige TV to Marvel blockbusters to indie favorites without ever being boxed in. Her next chapter is an action comedy built around one of the most recognizable toy brands on the planet.

‘Matchbox: The Movie‘ is an Apple Original Films, Skydance Media and Mattel Studios production, and it has been rolling out the red carpet across 2 continents. The cast traveled to Mexico City for a special screening on October 1, then moved on to New York for the world premiere.

That New York premiere took place Monday, October 5, at the AMC Lincoln Square Theater, and Parris was one of the evening’s standout arrivals. Photos captured by Getty and shared by Deadline show her beaming on the carpet in a strapless black midi dress covered in a sparkling silver diamond lattice pattern.

The dress had a sleek, fitted silhouette that let the pattern do the work. Parris paired it with strappy black heels and voluminous, bouncy curls, striking a confident pose with one hand on her hip in front of the film’s silver step-and-repeat.

It is not the first time she has made an impression on a premiere carpet. She previously mixed metals in a Gaurav Gupta look for the LA premiere of ‘They Cloned Tyrone.’

In the film, Parris plays Charmaine, one of a group of childhood friends whose lives are upended when their long-absent former leader, an undercover CIA agent named Sean (John Cena), returns to their small town. He unwittingly drags them into a frantic international pursuit to save the world.

Jessica Biel plays Aimee, Sam Richardson is Crosby and Arturo Castro is Ted. Parris joined the cast in late 2024 alongside Richardson and Castro.

The ensemble also includes Corey Stoll as Mosier, Bill Camp as Smalley, Danai Gurira as Helen and Golshifteh Farahani as Robbie. Daniel Bernhardt and Randeep Hooda round out the list as Falko and Mustafa.

The film’s action drew the cast closer. In a joint interview with E! News, Parris recalled watching Cena and her fellow actors push past their fears while filming.

She described a memory of standing on the bank by a chain bridge with the rest of the cast, off camera, as Cena prepared to run up the side of it. After he completed a stunt that included running up the bridge, jumping onto a helicopter and flying under the bridge, she and the crew were thrilled.

In the same interview, Biel said her new driving skills from the movie had earned her cool-mom points with her sons.

For audiences, Parris is best known for playing the adult Monica Rambeau in ‘WandaVision’ and ‘The Marvels.’ She also had a recurring role as Dawn Chambers on ‘Mad Men’ and appeared in the 2014 indie breakout ‘Dear White People,’ and she studied at Juilliard.

‘Matchbox’ marks a lighter, adventure-driven turn, and it pairs her with a comedy-heavy ensemble. Directed by Sam Hargrave, known for the ‘Extraction’ films, the movie is written by David Coggeshall, whose credits include ‘The Family Plan.’

‘Matchbox: The Movie’ premieres globally on Apple TV on Friday, October 9. It runs 2 hours and 6 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and action, and language.

With the premiere over and the film just days away from streaming, the cast’s red carpet looks have helped build anticipation. If Parris’s sparkling arrival is any indication, the cast is ready for the spotlight.
