Class is officially back in session at Philadelphia’s favorite underfunded public school. ABC has set the premiere for Wednesday, October 7, at 8:30 p.m. and the wait is nearly over for fans of Quinta Brunson’s sitcom.

The return of ‘Abbott Elementary’ comes with real shake ups for the staff. Gregory is now an assistant principal, Melissa has become a union representative, and the halls are about to get a lot more crowded.

‘Abbott Elementary’ Release Date and Episode Count

ABC announced the premiere date in late July, placing the show on Wednesday nights alongside ‘Scrubs,’ ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’ and ‘Shark Tank.’ That makes the new season a fall return, which matches the show’s recent habits.

The renewal itself came early. ABC picked up the sixth season on the same day the show resumed its fifth, which had originally premiered on October 1. The fifth season finale then aired on April 22, 2026.

Viewers can expect plenty of time back at the school. The sixth season will feature 22 half hour episodes.

Premiere Time on ABC

For viewers in the United States, the schedule is simple. The new term begins at 8:30 p.m. Eastern and 5:30 p.m. Pacific. That works out to 7:30 p.m. Central.

The opening episode is titled ‘Jungle Classroom.’ The first scene shows Janine decorating her classroom with a jungle theme and holding up a plush parrot to the camera.

It also fits the tone of the marketing. The season trailer opened with Guns N’ Roses and ‘Welcome to the Jungle.’

Where to Watch Online?

Anyone who misses the broadcast has an easy fallback. Each episode can be streamed the next day on Hulu, and on Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers. The first five seasons are already available on those services for a full rewatch.

International fans may need more patience. In the UK, the show streams on Disney+. The first eight episodes of the fifth season landed there in December 2025, with the rest arriving in May 2026, so a similar rollout is likely this time.

That UK pattern is an expectation rather than an official schedule, so check Disney+ closer to the time.

Season Preview and What Comes Next

The biggest storyline is the shift in power. Gregory will work more directly under Janelle James’ Ava, and the trailer hints at a power struggle between them. Jacob is also stepping into a new role as a liaison after his Season 5 appointment.

The school itself is bigger and louder than before. The district shut down a number of schools in the finale, leaving Abbott to absorb the extra students. The trailer shows the faculty adjusting to a new wave of enrollment.

There are some new faces too. Katy Mixon is guest starring, and her trailer scene has her clashing with Melissa over a classroom chair. According to TV Insider, the premiere includes a cold open with several surprise guest stars, plus a stunt one producer says they have been trying to pull off for years.

Romance is still the question on many minds. The executive producers are staying quiet on whether Gregory will propose to Janine, after he asked about engagement rings in the finale. With a new job, a crowded school and a ring possibly on the horizon, do you think Gregory finally pops the question to Janine this season, or will his assistant principal duties keep getting in the way, and what would the perfect proposal look like in the halls of Abbott?
