‘Below’ Release Date, Plot, Cast and Trailer as Josh Hartnett Faces Something Monstrous
Josh Hartnett is heading to the water’s edge this fall, and whatever is lurking beneath the surface does not sound friendly. Netflix’s ‘Below‘ is a six episode limited series that premieres on Thursday, October 8.
The new thriller lands right as horror fans settle into the spooky season. Netflix is gearing up to drop its next big thrilling creature feature following the success of ‘Widow’s Bay’. Here is everything we know about the series before it hits your screen.
‘Below’ Release Date and Time on Netflix
Mark your calendar for October 8, because Netflix has confirmed that the limited series premieres on that day. All six episodes are expected to be available at once, which makes this a prime weekend binge for anyone who likes their thrills served in one sitting.
As for the exact time, Netflix has not shared anything unusual for this release. Most of the time, Netflix releases new shows and movies at 12am PT, which is 3am ET. That means viewers on the East Coast will need to stay up late or wait until morning.
Fans in other regions should do the math too. That same release slot works out to 9am Central European Summer Time and 12:30pm India Standard Time. There are only two big exceptions to the rule, live events and anime shows, and ‘Below’ fits neither category.
What the ‘Below’ Trailer Reveals
Netflix first teased the series with a preview in late July. That first look painted a grim and ominous picture about a mysterious monster in the water. It was enough to get people talking well before the premiere.
A newer trailer has since arrived, and it keeps the pressure on. There has been solid buzz ever since word was first announced about the series, and the fresh footage only adds fuel to the fire. The preview wisely keeps the creature itself mostly out of view.
The tone is the real story here. The trailer leans on unease rather than loud scares, and creator Jesse McKeown says that tone took shape from the setting. In an age of jump scare overload, a slow burn built around the ocean feels like a refreshing change of pace.
Meet the ‘Below’ Cast
Hartnett leads the way as Calvin Penney. Mackenzie Davis plays Fonda Howander and Charlie Heaton plays Wade Penney. The pairing of a ‘Stranger Things’ alum and a ‘Station Eleven’ star gives the show serious genre credibility.

The rest of the Penney family is filled out by a strong group. Ruby Stokes plays Mary Penney, Rohan Campbell plays Jay Penney, Willow Kean plays Ruth Penney and Kaleb Horn plays Noah. Natasha Henstridge and Joshua Close also round out the ensemble.
Behind the scenes, the series comes from creator Jesse McKeown, a writer on ‘The Umbrella Academy’. Hartnett also serves as an executive producer, so he has a stake in the finished product beyond his on screen role.
The ‘Below’ Plot and Its Newfoundland Secrets
The story centers on a man with a heavy past. Calvin Penney is a stubborn but big hearted fisherman in a small Newfoundland town, still haunted by his father’s mysterious death from decades ago. Grief and guilt clearly run as deep as the water itself.
Things take a dark turn when the sea fights back. An unidentified creature begins terrorizing his hometown, and Calvin teams up with a visiting marine researcher played by Davis to confront it and reveal the island’s buried secrets. Protecting his son Wade, played by Heaton, only raises the stakes.
The setting gives the series its personality. Creator Jesse McKeown told Netflix Tudum that Newfoundland is “a rugged, dangerous, isolated, scary place in a lot of ways.” The series was filmed on location in St. John’s, Newfoundland, so that isolation should feel real on screen.
Netflix says the show blends local myth, thrilling suspense and heartfelt humour while exploring family, community and change. That mix could make ‘Below’ more than a simple monster hunt. So when the water finally gives up its secrets, will you side with Calvin’s stubborn gut instinct or trust the marine researcher who just arrived in town?
