ABC’s ‘R.J. Decker‘ is well into its second year, and the Tuesday night crime procedural is leaning hard into family drama. The new season launched on Tuesday, September 15, right after the ‘Dancing With the Stars’ premiere. Since then, Scott Speedman’s rumpled private investigator has been juggling bizarre cases and some serious personal baggage.

If you want to know what comes next for ‘R.J. Decker’, the next installment is a strange one even by this show’s standards. It sends R.J. and his dad after a murderous scheme that has a client convinced he is living the same day on repeat. Here is the release date, the air time, the streaming options, and a preview of what to expect.

‘R.J. Decker’ Release Date and Time

The next episode is titled “Better Luck Tomorrow,” and it airs on Tuesday, October 13, on ABC. It is the fifth episode of the season, so fans have a short wait ahead of them.

The broadcast slot has not changed. The episode runs from 10 to 11 p.m. Eastern. The show holds its usual 10/9c Tuesday time slot, which means viewers in the Central time zone can tune in at 9 p.m.

Before that, there is a new episode to get through. “The Angler” is the fourth episode of the season and is dated October 6, which is today. That one matters more than it might seem, because it is where R.J.’s father steps into the story, setting up the team up that follows a week later.

Where to Watch ‘R.J. Decker’ Online

The simplest way to catch the show is live on ABC every Tuesday night. For anyone who cannot make the broadcast, streaming is not far behind. Episodes stream on Hulu the following day.

Fans who are still catching up have an easy path as well. The entire first season is available on the streamer, so newcomers can binge the debut run before jumping into the current batch. That is a smart move, considering how much the second season leans on the fallout from the first season finale.

Viewers outside the United States have a slightly more complicated situation. Disney+ in Canada began carrying the season on Wednesday, September 16. Reelgood reports that other countries will get the season on Disney+ only after it wraps up on ABC, so patience may be required in those regions.

‘R.J. Decker’ Episode Preview and What to Expect

The official synopsis promises a case with real oddball energy. R.J. and his dad have to work out who has been gaslighting the caretaker at a senior living community. It is a setup that plays right into the show’s talent for mixing mystery with Florida eccentricity.

The twist is where things get fun. R.J.’s client believes he is stuck reliving the same day, and the team has to unravel the murderous scheme behind that illusion. A time loop story in a procedural is always a treat, and the gaslighting angle suggests someone is working very hard to make a vulnerable person doubt his own mind.

The episode also lands against a heavier backdrop. The season picked up about two months after the murder of the crooked politician Victor Ochoa, a mystery that has sidelined R.J.’s romance with Victor’s daughter Emi. Emi is trying to figure out who killed her father, so expect the case of the week to share space with the season’s larger questions.

Reggie Decker and the Family Story Driving the Season

The biggest new face this year belongs to a screen veteran. According to an exclusive from TVLine, Beau Bridges was tapped to recur as R.J.’s estranged father, Reggie Decker. That makes “Better Luck Tomorrow” a rare chance to see father and son working a case side by side.

Reggie is not exactly a dependable partner. ABC describes him as a charming, endlessly optimistic entrepreneur with a weakness for empty promises and unreliable behavior. He has been largely absent from R.J.’s life, always insisting a life changing score was just around the corner.

The casting also reflects a deliberate creative choice. Showrunner Rob Doherty has said Reggie’s visit will reveal more about R.J.’s childhood and the path that led him to where he is now. Bridges is a three time Emmy winner with a résumé that includes ‘Stargate SG-1’, ‘My Name Is Earl’, and ‘Matlock’, so the show has landed serious firepower for a recurring role.

Reggie arrives in “The Angler” while R.J. is investigating a murder at a fishing tournament, and the case turns personal when a figure from his past resurfaces. So when a self proclaimed entrepreneur with a long history of broken promises helps untangle a time loop con at a senior living community, can R.J. trust him this time, or is Reggie about to prove why that bridge was burned in the first place, and which side of the father and son divide do you land on?
