Few streaming thrillers this year have asked viewers to sit with a question as uncomfortable as the one at the heart of ‘Last Seen‘. The Apple TV drama has now closed its story, and the ‘Last Seen’ finale has fans arguing over whether anyone truly got what they wanted. It is the kind of ending that refuses to hand out easy answers.

The series premiered globally on September 9 with two episodes, followed by one each week. It is an Australian thriller adapted by Kris Mrksa from Ryan David Jahn’s novel ‘The Dispatcher’, with Christian Schwochow directing and executive producing. It is also Apple TV’s first original scripted series made, set and completely shot in Australia.

The story follows Ian Ridley (Patrick Brammall), a former detective turned police dispatcher whose daughter Maggie vanished 11 years ago. When a distress call from a teenage girl reaches his headset, he becomes certain it is her. She is alive, taken as a child by Henry (Brendan Cowell), who raised her with his wife Jenna (Maxine Peake) as Sarah, the daughter they had lost.

The finale, titled “The Choice,” opens with Henry running out of options and Jenna near death. He promises Sarah (Chloe Jean Lourdes) answers once they reach the compound where his father holds court. Ian, meanwhile, has grabbed Donald (Daniel Henshall) at gunpoint and is forcing him to lead the way.

Along the road, Donald comes clean about his past and his connection to Jenna, and he finally tells Ian where they are headed. Ian then heads off on his own, bleeding and determined to get his daughter back whatever the cost. Detective Pena (Zahra Newman) is also closing in, having worked out where Henry is going.

The healing Henry promised never arrives. When the group gets there, Jenna has already died, leaving Sarah in pain and demanding answers. Henry then turns to his father and the few armed men left on the compound to fend Ian off.

Sarah slips free and runs to meet Ian, saving him from a bullet. When Henry’s father keeps up his pursuit regardless, Henry shoots him to protect Sarah, and Ian grabs Henry and holds him at gunpoint.

This is the moment the finale’s title points to. Sarah steps in and tells Ian she can’t stand to lose her father, which is what Henry has become to her. Ian lowers the weapon, but the rejection lands harder than any bullet.

Cowell has suggested the answer lies with Sarah herself. “I think the ending has to do with what she wants,” he said in an interview with TV Fanatic. One recap writer reads it as Sarah having been happy in her quiet rural life, with Ian’s desperate search only making things worse.

Henry’s story does not end with a clean getaway. As he and Sarah try to leave, police are waiting. Sarah suggests they give up, but Henry grabs his rifle and steps out of the car, choosing suicide by cop in front of her.

Sarah is then reunited with Deb (Jessica Wren) and Dean (Tobias Muhafidin). It is awkward, but they begin finding their way as a family. Ian is left with an uneasy relationship with both Sarah and Deb, though he finds something like peace in knowing they are safe.

Not in the conventional sense. One critic described the finale as eschewing a clearly tragic or upbeat ending, closing instead on the question of what happens next. That fits with how the cast talked about the show before it aired.

Brammall promised something different from a typical thriller payoff. Speaking to The A.V. Club, he said he believes viewers get “an unexpected ending,” one that offers the potential for healing rather than a neat resolution. In ‘Last Seen’, finding someone and getting them back turn out to be two very different things.

Did Sarah make the right choice in the Last Seen finale?
