‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ is closing in on theaters, and the biggest question for fans is no longer just what happens in the film. It is how much homework they need to do first. After years of spin-offs, streaming series and multiverse detours, the MCU has never been harder to jump into.

For a long time, the honest answer to “what should I watch?” was simply “everything.” That is a lot to ask of casual viewers, especially with the Russo brothers directing and an ensemble that pulls in characters from across Marvel’s screen history. The film arrives on December 18, with Robert Downey Jr. leading the cast as Doctor Doom.

Now Disney+ is giving fans an official shortcut. According to a post from MCU Film News, the streamer has a new “Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday” playlist that highlights the essential titles to watch beforehand in green. The footage shows the collection sitting in the featured rows of the app, above a separate MCU Infinity Saga row.

Based on reports, the collection runs to 15 titles, which IGN counted as 14 films and 1 TV show. It starts with the original ‘X-Men’ and ‘X2’, then moves through ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’, ‘The Avengers’, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’. From there it covers the multiverse era, including ‘Loki’, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’.

The rest of the list brings things up to date. It includes ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’, ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, ‘Captain America: Brave New World’, ‘Thunderbolts’ and ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’. ‘Loki’ is the only Disney+ series on the list, which makes sense given how heavily it leans on timelines, variants and alternate realities.

The picks line up neatly with the film’s expected crossover. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and Kelsey Grammer are among the Fox-era X-Men actors returning. That explains why the first 2 ‘X-Men’ movies sit at the very top of the countdown.

As always, the omissions are getting almost as much attention as the inclusions. There are no ‘Iron Man’ films on the list, even though Downey Jr. is returning as the villain rather than as Tony Stark. ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy’ movies and ‘WandaVision’ are missing too.

The most discussed absence is ‘The Marvels’. Its post-credits scene sends Monica Rambeau to an alternate universe where she meets Grammer’s Beast, a character now confirmed for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. Forbes pointed out that some of the picks may hide clues in plain sight, since certain films feature characters who haven’t yet been announced for the movie.

The list also hints at the shape of the story. The film is the penultimate chapter of the Multiverse Saga, and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ follows on December 17, 2027. Official descriptions say the Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts and X-Men all face off against Doctor Doom.

Pedro Pascal, Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh and Simu Liu are among the stars in the film’s massive cast. Chris Evans is also confirmed to return as Steve Rogers, which explains why the original ‘Captain America’ film earned a place on the list. The first teaser confirmed his comeback.

For newcomers, the playlist offers a rare gift: a clear, studio-approved path through two decades of Marvel storytelling. For longtime fans, it is a fresh excuse to rewatch favorites and hunt for hidden hints about the movie. Either way, it turns the long wait for December into something more like a guided countdown.
