Michael Douglas (82) Claims Late Kobe Bryant Had a Very Creative Excuse to Visit Catherine Zeta-Jones’ (57) House
Few Hollywood romances have been retold as often as Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones’. Their story comes with a bold pick-up line, a 25-year age gap and a shared birthday. Now Douglas has added fresh detail from the late 1990s in his new memoir, ‘One Helluva Ride’.
The couple first met at the Deauville Film Festival in August 1998, after Douglas had seen her breakthrough film ‘The Mask of Zorro’. They began dating in March 1999 and got engaged on New Year’s Eve in Aspen. They married in November 2000.
It was a busy, glamorous time in Los Angeles, and Zeta-Jones was settling into the neighborhood where she lived. According to Douglas’s memoir, that neighborhood came with a very famous neighbor. He writes that she had a house in Pacific Palisades directly below Kobe Bryant’s.
Douglas claims the Lakers superstar kept finding excuses to stop by Zeta-Jones’ house “a lot” in the late 1990s. He jokes that he isn’t sure how many times Bryant’s dog went missing, the implication being that the dog served as a convenient pretext. It is a playful line from a man who was dating her at the time.
The timing adds a layer of intrigue. Bryant had not yet met Vanessa Laine, who became his wife in 2001. He was also 9 years younger than Zeta-Jones, while Douglas is 25 years older than his wife.
The overlap is tight. Douglas and Zeta-Jones got engaged on New Year’s Eve in 1999, and Bryant proposed to Laine 5 months later, in May 2000.
This isn’t the first time the neighbor connection has surfaced. After Bryant’s death, Zeta-Jones shared an Instagram tribute describing him as her next-door neighbor in Pacific Palisades. She noted that it had been 24 years since they first crossed paths, when they were both young and ambitious.
She explained that they met the day he moved in, because his dog kept wandering into her garden. In the tribute she also said his basketball court was her view. She watched his talent and dedication, she wrote, without knowing what he would become.
She even pointed out the coincidence in the number, since 24 years was also the number Bryant wore for the Lakers. Her version paints a warm picture of a friendly neighbor connection. Douglas, by contrast, gives the same dog story a more mischievous twist.
Douglas’s memoir revisits the story of how he fell for Zeta-Jones. He recalls being struck by how smart, funny and confident she seemed. After a dinner date, he writes, he told her at the hotel elevator that he was going to father her children, and he insists it wasn’t a cheap line but the truth.
That honesty proved prophetic. The couple welcomed their son Dylan in August 2000 and their daughter Carys in April 2003. Zeta-Jones later won an Oscar for ‘Chicago’, and the 2 have continued to appear at awards shows and premieres together.
Douglas also writes that their bond goes beyond attraction, describing it as an unknown connection built on mutual respect. That sentiment gives the Kobe anecdote some context. It reads less like a warning about a rival and more like a fond, humorous memory from a relationship that clearly worked out.
The Bryant detail will likely become one of the memoir’s most talked-about tidbits. It combines basketball royalty, a Hollywood power couple and a dog with suspiciously perfect timing.
