Few scandals have shaken the British monarchy in recent years like the fallout from the Epstein files. At the center of that storm is Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the former Prince Andrew, whose friendship with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein has cost him his royal standing and dominated headlines. Now a Hollywood heavyweight has added his voice.

The consequences for Andrew have been dramatic. The King stripped him of his royal titles late last year, and he later gave up his long lease on Royal Lodge in Windsor, moving to a more modest property on the Sandringham estate. In February, police arrested him on his 66th birthday, making him the most senior royal figure arrested in modern times.

Robert De Niro has now publicly weighed in on that fight, urging the former prince to take accountability for his friendship with Epstein and to drop his legal challenge against the police. The Oscar-winning actor made the remarks at a New York event this week, in a moment that quickly crossed the Atlantic.

De Niro spoke in Washington Square Park on Monday evening at an event calling for the release of more unredacted Epstein files. Rosie O’Donnell joined him, alongside survivors of Epstein’s crimes. The gathering was also aimed at encouraging people to vote in the upcoming midterms.

The Sun asked De Niro whether Andrew should publicly apologize and take accountability. De Niro answered yes, adding that everyone involved should. He went further and said the former prince should drop his lawsuit against the police.

De Niro’s remarks land at a pivotal moment. Andrew has launched a judicial review asking the High Court to examine whether Thames Valley Police acted lawfully when they obtained warrants to search his Sandringham home and his former Royal Lodge residence. The warrants were issued by a judge at the Central Criminal Court on February 18.

A High Court hearing is due Thursday at 2 p.m. before Mr Justice Hilliard. It will begin in private and concerns a police bid to restrict access to court documents connected to the case. Andrew wants the warrants quashed, which would make him the first royal in modern times to mount a challenge of this kind.

It’s worth being clear about what is at stake legally. Andrew was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, following allegations that he shared sensitive information with Epstein while serving as Britain’s trade envoy. He was interviewed for around 11 hours and released under investigation.

He has not been charged, and he has denied any wrongdoing. He has previously said he regrets his friendship with Epstein. The judicial review itself doesn’t determine whether he committed any offense, since it only examines the lawfulness of the police action behind the searches.

De Niro’s comments are part of a larger campaign. At the same event, he praised the courage of survivors and criticized President Trump over the remaining files, calling for their immediate release. His remarks were political as well as moral, and they reflect how the Epstein case continues to straddle the worlds of law, politics and entertainment.

On the British side, the pressure also hasn’t eased. At least 9 police forces in the UK have said they are looking into claims arising from the files, some of them related to Andrew. For survivors and campaigners, the central demand remains transparency and accountability for everyone connected to the case.

Celebrity involvement in a legal and political saga like this can cut both ways. Supporters see it as a way to keep public attention on survivors and on the unreleased documents. Critics may argue that a famous actor weighing in on a live legal matter adds heat rather than light.

Either way, De Niro’s comments have already amplified the story. With the High Court hearing underway and a police investigation still open, the next few weeks could shape how this chapter ends for Andrew.
