Film festival season has a way of turning red carpets into style laboratories, and few stars understand the assignment like Emma Stone. Over the years, the two-time Oscar winner has built a reputation for polished, low-key looks that let the fabric and the silhouette do the talking. That approach was on full display at this year’s New York Film Festival.

The 64th edition of the festival has been packed with premieres, and Wednesday night at Alice Tully Hall belonged to a project close to Stone’s heart. The evening marked the New York debut of a new comedy from a filmmaker she has collaborated with before. It also brought together a cast of heavy hitters and the producers behind the scenes.

Stone attended the premiere of ‘The Debut’ on October 7, posing on the festival’s green carpet in a pale off-white Louis Vuitton midi dress. A photo of the look, credited to Theo Wargo/Getty, has been circulating online, and it shows Stone smiling with her auburn hair in soft waves against the Rolex and Film at Lincoln Center backdrop.

The dress comes from Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer collection and is built around a slip silhouette. Two ultra-thin straps hold up a plunging bodice, while a layered cowl neckline in a soft gray tone adds a subtle contrast. The fluid fabric skims her frame before dropping into a clean hemline.

Stone, styled by her longtime collaborator Petra Flannery, kept the accessories restrained. She wore off-white Aquazzura sandals with thin straps and carried a cream Louis Vuitton Wallet On A Chain bag. Rings on both hands were the only visible flourishes, which let the dress take center stage.

Fashion outlets described the overall effect as a nod to effortless 1990s minimalism. It also reinforces Stone’s role as one of Louis Vuitton’s most visible global brand ambassadors. For fans of understated red carpet dressing, it’s a textbook example.

Stone isn’t just a guest at this premiere. She’s one of the producers on ‘The Debut’, along with her husband, Dave McCary, and Ali Herting, through their Fruit Tree banner. The film is also backed by Topic Studios and A24.

The team previously worked with writer-director Jesse Eisenberg on ‘A Real Pain’, and Stone attended the New York Film Festival screening of that film in 2024. That history makes this latest premiere feel like a continuation of a creative partnership. Eisenberg wrote and directed ‘The Debut’, and also wrote the original songs.

The film follows Mona Friedman, played by Julianne Moore, a timid housewife who is unexpectedly cast in a community theater production of an original musical. Under the influence of a domineering director played by Paul Giamatti, she begins to lose herself in the role and the intense world around the production. The trailer introduces Giamatti’s character as the biggest name in New Jersey community theater.

The cast also includes Halle Bailey, Havana Rose Liu, Bernadette Peters, Cara Buono, Craig Bierko and Eldar Isgandarov, with Eisenberg himself appearing on screen. It’s Eisenberg’s third film as a director, following ‘When You Finish Saving the World’ and ‘A Real Pain’. Moore and Eisenberg previously worked together on the first of those.

A24 has set a limited theatrical release for December 11, followed by a wide release on Christmas Day. The film is also scheduled to close the 70th BFI London Film Festival, which gives it a prestigious send-off on the festival circuit. That rollout mirrors the strategy used for several of the studio’s biggest awards contenders.

For Stone, the evening was a reminder of how many hats she wears. She’s an actress, a producer and a style staple, often all in the same week. The premiere of ‘The Debut’ shows she’s just as invested in championing other artists’ work as she is in her own on-screen roles.

In a season full of dramatic gowns and statement pieces, Stone’s choice stood out precisely because it was so restrained. A pale slip dress, simple accessories and a warm smile were all the look needed. It’s the kind of quiet confidence that fans have come to expect from her.
