There are actors who wear fashion, and then there are actors who seem to speak it fluently. Margaret Qualley belongs firmly in the second group, with a long-running relationship with Chanel and a knack for turning a simple black dress into a conversation piece. Her latest appearance proves that point once again.

The occasion was a big one. Qualley’s new romantic drama arrived in select theaters this week, and its stars and filmmakers gathered in New York to celebrate. With a blue carpet, a Prime Video backdrop and a packed schedule of fall premieres, it was a good night for style watchers.

Qualley attended the New York special screening of ‘Love of Your Life‘ on October 7 at the IFC Center, wearing a long-sleeved black Chanel gown. At first glance the dress looks clean and minimalist from the front, but the real surprise is at the back. A photo shared on X by 21metgala, showing both angles, has already passed 20,000 views.

The Chanel gown is made from black mixed fibers and falls in a figure-skimming column to the floor, with an asymmetric drape at the skirt. The back plunges dramatically to reveal an open design. A handmade black silk-petal camellia from Maison d’art Lemarié rests across the upper back, attached with two slender metal chains.

Those delicate chains give the dress its signature stringy look. The gown reportedly retails for $13,750. Qualley swept her hair into a neat updo so the back detail stayed fully visible, and added a black manicure and strappy black heels to keep the look cohesive.

Qualley was joined by director Rachel Morrison and co-star Aaron Pierre. Pierre went more casual in a brown suede jacket over a white T-shirt with khakis, a contrast that let Qualley’s gown take center stage. The trio posed together on the blue carpet.

It’s a fitting event for a film that has been building momentum since its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in the Special Presentations category on September 13. Amazon MGM Studios is giving it a short theatrical run before it streams globally on Prime Video on October 14. That release pattern mirrors the approach used for other awards-minded titles this year.

The film follows Maya, played by Qualley, whose chance encounter with Charlie, played by Gabriel Basso, sets off a sweeping romance and a future she never imagined. When that future is suddenly upended, Maya is sent hurtling toward an unexpected new life. She has to reckon with who she is, what she wants and how to love again.

Morrison directs from a script by Julia Cox, the writer behind ‘Nyad’. It’s Morrison’s second feature, following ‘The Fire Inside’. The cast also includes Pierre, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Catherine Keener, Tamara Lawrance and Corey Johnson, while Ryan Gosling and Jessie Henderson produce through their company Open Invite Entertainment.

Early reviews have been warm. IndieWire’s David Ehrlich gave the film a B grade after its TIFF debut, calling it a lush and tender romantic drama of the kind Hollywood rarely makes anymore, though he wished it had dug a little deeper into some character relationships. The A.V. Club called it a refreshingly grown-up romance in a genre increasingly dominated by young adult adaptations, anchored by Qualley’s luminous screen presence.

Those notices suggest the film is finding an audience that wants mature, character-driven love stories. For Qualley, who has spent much of her career in genre-bending projects, it’s a chance to carry a more intimate drama. It also gives the red carpet a softer, more romantic mood.

‘Love of Your Life’ is her third film of the year, following ‘How to Make a Killing’ and Ridley Scott’s ‘The Dog Stars’. Her fashion choices have tracked each release. For the Los Angeles screening of ‘How to Make a Killing’ in February, she wore a backless Chanel gown with an ombré sequin effect.

In August, she arrived at the London premiere of ‘The Dog Stars’ in a black Chanel fringe dress and the house’s soleless sandals. As a longtime Chanel ambassador, she has made backless silhouettes something of a signature. The camellia-detailed gown fits neatly into that pattern while adding a new twist.

What makes Qualley’s looks work is the contrast between restraint and surprise. The front of this gown is almost severe, but the open back and chain detailing add an unexpected, romantic flourish. It’s a smart match for a film about love, loss and starting over.

How would you rate Margaret Qualley’s dramatic open-back Chanel look?
