‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Presales Are ‘Pure Madness’ as Trackers Compare Its Pace to ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’
Box office season is rarely quiet, but the buildup to December is shaping up to be one of the loudest in years. After a summer in which ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ rewrote the record books, all eyes have turned to Marvel’s next big swing. The latest ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ presales chatter suggests the hype isn’t cooling off.
Marvel has tried an unusual strategy this time. Tickets went on sale months earlier than usual, with premium-format seats opening in July and wider sales following in August. No major blockbuster has started advance sales this early, which makes direct comparisons tricky but also makes the early numbers fascinating.
That’s the backdrop for a post that has been gathering attention on r/boxoffice. A tracker known as TheFlatLannister, writing on the Box Office Theory forum, called the film’s pace “pure madness” and said it simply isn’t slowing down. The thread, reshared on Reddit, has drawn hundreds of upvotes and comments.
The comparison point is ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, and the numbers are measured at 71 days before release. In one tracking sample, labeled MTC1, ‘Doomsday’ on Friday is running around where ‘Brand New Day’ was 12 days out. Saturday looks like about 9 days out, and previews are closer to 19 days out.
A second sample, labeled MTC3, tells a similar story. ‘Doomsday‘ previews match roughly 11 days out for ‘Brand New Day’, while Friday is near 13 days out, Saturday near 11 and Sunday near 10. In other words, the Marvel film is selling at a pace the Spider-Man blockbuster only reached much closer to its opening.
The poster also argues that there are no signs the sales are front-loaded, meaning bunched up early before fading. He adds that the film could post a great internal multiplier because of a spillover effect. It’s one analyst’s read, but it’s a notable one given how often early presales are dismissed as a burst of superfan demand.
The broader numbers back up the enthusiasm. Marvel’s first day of premium-format sales brought in $16.5 million, according to Variety, roughly double the first-day figure for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’. ‘Doomsday’ later became the first film to pass $40 million in domestic presales with about 100 days to go.
Global Box Office reported domestic presales above $55 million, and Disney’s chief financial officer said earlier that they had passed $50 million. More than 70% of those sales reportedly went to Infinity Vision, Disney’s new premium large-format brand. On October 6, the tracker said worldwide presales had crossed $100 million.
International numbers have been just as striking. The film was reported to be the fastest to pass $1 million in pre-release sales in both Brazil and the U.K. Earlier on, TheWrap reported that after two days, sales were running about 65% ahead of ‘Brand New Day’.

‘Brand New Day’ sets a high bar. It opened to $360 million domestically and has since grossed more than $2 billion worldwide, making it the biggest opening on record. Tracking for ‘Doomsday’ has pointed to a domestic opening in the $260 million to $300 million range, though some insiders have speculated about bigger numbers.
Some commentators have floated the idea of a $1 billion global opening weekend, though those are estimates and not confirmed forecasts. The ensemble cast, which includes Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Florence Pugh, is clearly part of the draw. The film is directed by the Russo brothers, who also made the earlier ‘Avengers’ blockbusters.
It’s worth noting that not every outlet shares the “no front-loading” view. Some reports have described the presale trajectory as unusually front-loaded from the start. Others have cautioned that presales alone don’t guarantee a record-breaking opening and that plenty of time remains for enthusiasm to shift.
There’s also the matter of the calendar. ‘Doomsday’ opens on December 18, the same day as ‘Dune: Part Three’, and the pairing has been nicknamed “Dunesday.” The Denis Villeneuve film holds IMAX exclusivity for three weeks, which is why Marvel built its own Infinity Vision format.
For a studio that has weathered an uneven few years at the box office, these early signs are a welcome change of tone. A strong run for ‘Doomsday’ would follow directly on the heels of ‘Brand New Day’, creating a rare one-two punch for Marvel’s brand. It would also add fuel to the idea that audiences still turn out for a true event film.
Of course, tracking at 71 days out is a snapshot, not a verdict. Reviews, word of mouth and competition will all shape the final result. For now, though, the early signals are hard to ignore.
Do you think Avengers: Doomsday can surpass Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s record-breaking opening weekend?
