Spoilers ahead for this week’s installment of Syfy’s sci-fi survival drama. After weeks of slow-burning mysteries, ‘The Ark’ is now in the home stretch of its latest run. With only one hour left, the penultimate episode had a lot of threads to tie together.

The season has followed two storylines at once. Captain Sharon Garnet leads Ark One on a rescue mission through space, while the rest of the crew builds a new life on Homebase-1 and tries to understand what’s wrong with the planet. This week, both stories came to a head in an episode titled ‘A Pretty Nasty One’.

The biggest turn came in the closing moments, when Garnet and Ian learned something that made her question her own feelings. The hour aired on October 7 and, according to its official summary, saw Ark One return to Ark 22 with a plan while Homebase’s mystery was finally solved, but possibly too late. Here’s a full breakdown of what happened.

On the ground, the biggest development was Brice finally accepting that Doc had been telling the truth. She had said that something on Ross-128 had received a signal from Homebase-1 and that Brice had been saved so he could fix everything. Brice admitted he hadn’t believed her, which explained why he’d kept it to himself for so long.

With everyone working together, the group got to the bottom of the problem. Eva built a set of goggles that let the crew see the paintings on the wall, and they now know what is broken and causing trouble for the planet. As usual in this series, fixing it isn’t simple, and a series of security lapses left the colony exposed.

The danger isn’t over. Ark One is expected to play a role in saving Alicia, and the colony’s problems have clearly been set up to explode in the finale. It’s a tense cliffhanger-style setup, though the season’s creator has promised more closure than that.

Aboard Ark 22, Garnet’s mission centered on Drake, the clone leader who had been framed all season as a major threat. Ark One’s plan was to meet him in exchange for a cure. The meeting went more smoothly than expected, and his own guards ultimately turned on him.

Many viewers may find that anticlimactic. A review from TV Fanatic gave the episode 3 out of 5 and called it probably the weakest of the season. The critic argued that Drake was built up as a villain and then dealt with too easily, though she suggested the hour might not have been about him at all.

The real focus was the clone storyline. The Gen 3 clones all received their genome therapy, which offers hope for those who want the clone program to continue, as long as proper guardrails are put in place. The clones on Ark 22 also get a chance at a happier life by heading to a planet said to be filled with other clones, away from humans who wish them harm.

The episode also revealed where the clones come from. They were originally humans who donated their DNA to the program, which raises deep questions for Garnet. That reveal is what powers the ending.

Garnet and Ian discovered that the people who donated their DNA were a couple in life who deeply loved each other. They also noticed that every pair of their clones fell for one another. That raises an uncomfortable possibility: were Garnet and Ian programmed to fall in love?

Ian didn’t seem bothered, arguing that love is essentially a set of hormones telling us how to feel. Garnet, however, wasn’t sure how to react, and the episode ended with her wrestling with the idea that her feelings may not have been entirely her own. It’s a smart character beat, especially after the season revealed that Garnet herself is a Gen 3 clone.

Creator Dean Devlin has promised that the season’s mysteries will be explained and that the finale will deliver closure rather than a cliffhanger. He also told TV Insider that Brice’s ending is “one of the most powerful things we’ve ever done with a character.” That suggests the final hour will be emotional as well as plot-heavy.

The finale airs October 14 on Syfy, where new episodes air on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. Ahead of it, the questions are clear: will Homebase-1 survive, will Ark One arrive in time, and will Garnet accept her feelings for Ian? Reviewers are also hoping the series gets renewed so the story can continue.

After learning that their original human counterparts were deeply in love, do you think Garnet and Ian’s feelings are truly their own?
