Few characters in the ton have held as much quiet authority as Lady Violet Bridgerton. She has guided a family of eight children through scandals, courtships and heartbreak, all while carrying a grief that has colored nearly every season. It’s long been clear that her own love story deserved a spotlight.

Netflix has finally agreed. After years of fan hopes and a steady stream of hints, the streamer has answered one of the franchise’s most persistent questions and confirmed that the ‘Bridgerton’ universe is getting another expansion.

The streamer has greenlit an untitled limited series chronicling the early life of a young Lady Violet and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. On the flagship series, the widowed family matriarch is played by Ruth Gemmell. The announcement came with a Lady Whistledown-style letter to the ton, and the new ‘Bridgerton’ prequel will follow a rollout similar to ‘Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story’.

Shonda Rhimes will write, executive produce and co-showrun the series alongside Nicholas Nardini, who previously worked with her on ‘Queen Charlotte’. Tom Verica, a frequent Rhimes collaborator whose credits include ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, will direct and executive produce, with longtime Shondaland partner Betsy Beers also executive producing.

Rhimes has a particular connection to Violet already. She penned the matriarch’s unforgettable “I am the tea that you are having” scene in the fourth season, which made the choice of writer feel especially natural. The project will be a limited series from Shondaland, matching the format of the earlier spinoff.

Unlike ‘Queen Charlotte’, which was an original creation, the Violet series has a literary starting point. Author Julia Quinn published the novella ‘Violet in Bloom’ in 2013, telling the backstory of Violet and Edmund’s love story. The book gives the production a framework for the romance, even though the characters’ early years have only been glimpsed on screen.

Edmund has been largely absent from the show beyond mentions. A younger Violet appeared in ‘Queen Charlotte’, where Connie Jenkins-Greig played her, while Edmund was only referenced. It’s not yet known whether Jenkins-Greig or Gemmell will appear in the new series, and the actor for a young Edmund has not been announced.

Among the three older women who anchor the main series, Violet, Lady Danbury and Queen Charlotte, Violet has seemed the most obviously primed for a prequel in recent seasons. ‘Queen Charlotte’ introduced younger versions of all three, making each of them a potential subject for a future spinoff. Queen Charlotte got hers first, and the 2023 limited series briefly cracked Netflix’s Most Popular English series list.

Showrunner Jess Brownell had also floated the idea publicly. In a March interview with Radio Times, she said she would love a young Violet spinoff, a hint that fans took as encouragement. The official confirmation came only now, in October.

The news arrives amid a busy stretch for the franchise. Season 5 is currently in production in London and will turn its attention to Hannah Dodd’s Francesca and Masali Baduza’s Michaela Stirling when it returns in 2027. Season 6, which was greenlit earlier, will follow Claudia Jessie’s Eloise.

The franchise’s strength is also well established. The first and third seasons remain among Netflix’s most popular English-language series, which helps explain why the streamer keeps investing in the world. With a spinoff, two more seasons of the main series and a Shondaland production line in place, ‘Bridgerton’ shows no signs of slowing.

For now, many of the details are still under wraps. The series doesn’t have a title, a premiere date or a cast, though fans have already started calling it ‘Lady Violet: A Bridgerton Story’ based on its predecessor. Netflix has said only that the series will chronicle her early life and her romance with Edmund.

That gap leaves plenty of room for speculation. Casting a younger Edmund will be a major question, as will the question of how much of the novella’s tone the show adopts. Given how well ‘Queen Charlotte’ balanced romance and heartbreak, it’s reasonable to expect something similarly tender.

How excited are you to see young Lady Violet and Edmund’s love story?
