Doctor Doom’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Costume Takes Its Throne at New York Comic Con

Doctor Doom has never been a villain who sits quietly in the background. In Marvel lore, he’s a ruler, a scientist and a sorcerer all at once, wrapped in one of the most recognizable costumes in comic history. That’s a lot of pressure for a wardrobe department.

Marvel Studios has spent months teasing how Robert Downey Jr.’s version of the character will look on screen. Between convention displays, promotional art and trailers, the studio has treated every glimpse of the armor like an event, and fans have responded in kind.

Now the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Doctor Doom costume has turned up on the New York Comic Con show floor. It’s on display at the Marvel booth at the Javits Center, where the studio’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ costume experience has set up shop for the convention. The figure stands in front of a glowing red-orange backdrop with a small placard reading “Doctor Doom,” and the whole setup is built to make the character look like he’s holding court.

The display shows a full-length look in deep green: a heavy hooded cloak, a layered tunic cinched with a thick belt and buckle, dark gloves and sturdy boots. A chain clasp holds the cape in place at the chest, and a smooth metal mask sits beneath the hood. It’s classic Doom through and through, and it keeps the character’s silhouette front and center.

The costume is part of a larger display that also includes suits and props shown earlier at San Diego Comic-Con, among them Red Guardian, Sam Wilson’s Captain America and a Sentinel head. Bringing the collection to New York gives East Coast fans a chance to see the pieces in person, which is a big part of the convention’s appeal.

This isn’t the first time Doom’s armor has taken a bow. At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Marvel swapped out another display at its booth for the full Doctor Doom costume worn by Downey in the film, just hours before its Hall H panel. At D23 in August, the studio then unveiled what it called an alternate suit, which features softer detailing, leather gloves and boots rather than metal ones, and a cloak held by a single clasp.

That variety has fueled plenty of speculation. Some observers have wondered whether the different looks point to different stages of the character’s journey, though that remains a guess for now. The apparent design, credited by one outlet to veteran MCU costumer Judianna Makovsky, also uses darker tones than the green robes Doom wore in his cameo in ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’.

The actor’s involvement has been a recurring talking point. Co-director Joe Russo has said that Downey has been deeply immersed in developing the character, including writing backstory and costume ideas. That level of commitment helps explain why Marvel is putting so much weight on how Doom appears.

The promotional art that first hinted at the look, spotted at a Disney marketing expo in Shanghai, showed comics-faithful touches like chain mail, a lamellar breastplate and symbols on the cloak clasps. Some observers have suggested those symbols represent Doom’s mastery of science and magic, though that has not been confirmed.

The costume isn’t the only Doom-themed attraction at New York Comic Con. Heroes & Villains has turned its booth into a Latverian marketplace inspired by Doom’s homeland, showcasing apparel and accessories tied to the film. Highlights include a Doctor Doom-inspired varsity jacket, a backpack, a Fantastic Four jacket and an X-Men bomber, with the convention running through Sunday, October 11.

Even the toy aisles are getting in on it. Funko has announced a limited convention exclusive of a different Doom variant, the Sorcerer Supreme version, which is separate from the version Downey plays in the film. All of it points to how central the character has become to Marvel’s marketing push.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to arrive in theaters on December 18, expect more reveals in the weeks ahead. Downey is also set to return in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ the following December, so Doom’s look has to hold up across two films. For now, fans can see the costume up close and decide whether it lives up to the hype.

How would you rate Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom costume after seeing it up close?
