Few finales have reshuffled a sports comedy as dramatically as the latest chapter of ‘Ted Lasso‘. The beloved Apple TV series closed its fourth season with a coaching shake-up that left fans debating what it means for the show’s future. Now one of its stars is offering a window into how that decision came together.

Spoiler warning: this article discusses the finale. The episode, titled ‘The Departing Lass’, aired on Wednesday and rewrote the roles of nearly everyone on the coaching staff at AFC Richmond.

Brendan Hunt, who plays Coach Beard and is a co-creator of the series, says the decision to have Ted step down came straight from Jason Sudeikis. Hunt told Variety, “That was something Jason wanted to happen from the beginning of the writers’ room.” He added that Sudeikis saw the move as fundamental to the season.

The twist also came with a note of caution about what lies ahead. Hunt admitted that there is no guarantee the show returns for a fifth season, saying Sudeikis plays the cards close to his chest and that the team has always basically hoped to come back for more than one.

In the finale, Ted hands over his position as manager of the club’s women’s team, the Lady Greyhounds, to Alice Chilton. He then becomes an assistant manager alongside Beard. Roy Kent also accepts the head coaching job at Chelsea but stays on through the end of Richmond’s season.

Hunt says Ted’s decision is not a judgment on his abilities. He told TVLine that Ted could tell from the beginning that Alice was coach material, and that the move is meant to give him more time with his son, Henry.

Hunt said Ted has watched Alice grow, noting that she was almost ready when they first met her and is now much more so. The finale leans into that arc, giving her the top job and a tangible symbol of the handover. Reports suggest the idea of an assistant manager character came from Sudeikis early on.

For Alice, played by Tanya Reynolds, the promotion caps a season of steady development. The change also means the Lady Greyhounds enter a new era under fresh leadership.

Roy’s move to Chelsea closes one chapter while leaving the door open for another. He and Rebecca part on good terms, and Roy leaves Richmond with Keeley. Hunt says the couple’s storyline is the latest beat in their adventure and that it is not an exit by any means.

He also said Roy’s job matters less than his role in Keeley’s life, and that there is no reason to think he is gone forever. Hunt said he is curious to see Roy and Keeley become parents.

The finale also featured an emotional memorial for Mae at the Crown & Anchor, where Henry struggles with her death. Ted tells Henry the truth about his grandfather’s death rather than deflecting, and Keeley’s viral promo video fills Nelson Road for the Lady Greyhounds’ final match.

Rebecca’s ownership of the club is put to the test by Zelda’s hostile takeover, but Hugo sells his shares back to her. Mae’s will returns her stake to Rebecca, giving her 51%, and Matthijs proposes to Rebecca, who accepts. A closing montage includes Beard shaving his head and Ted delivering the going-away gift he had withheld earlier in the season.

Hunt explained that the returning cast from the first three seasons appeared at the end because the moment is meant to be transitional. He described it as a passing of the torch between the show’s past and its present. A memorial title card for Anthony Head was also added, with Hunt calling him beloved by all of them.

The closing montage includes Mae’s voice reading a Mary Oliver poem, a quiet note that leaves the story feeling open rather than closed.

Nothing about a renewal has been confirmed. Hunt says the team has never known whether there will be more than this, though the creative team has worked with hopes for more. For fans, the finale’s open-ended structure leaves plenty of room for a return.

Should Ted Lasso return for Season 5?
