Russell appeared on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ to talk about the new season of ‘The Diplomat’, marking her 10th appearance on the show. Photos from the evening show her in a black, high-neck dress with voluminous sleeves and a gathered skirt, finished with black strappy heels. She posed in front of the show’s blue logo wall and later crossed her legs on the guest couch with the New York skyline glowing behind her.
It is a long-running relationship that has become a staple of her publicity runs. Each visit gives her a chance to tease what is coming without giving away the biggest twists.

The fourth season of ‘The Diplomat’ premieres globally on Thursday, Oct. 15, with all eight hour-long episodes arriving at once on Netflix. The streamer has already released a teaser trailer, first-look images and a synopsis. The series is rated TV-MA and sits in the drama and thriller space.
Debora Cahn is the creator and showrunner, with Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Russell, Peter Noah and Eli Attie among the executive producers. Production took place in London, Washington, D.C., New York and Lucca, Italy, which expands the show’s global scope.
The story picks up in the fallout from the previous season’s ending, when President Grace Penn and Vice President Hal Wyler began secretly working to steal a Russian nuclear submarine’s doomsday weapon. Netflix’s synopsis says “two marriages threaten to eat each other alive,” and a moment breaks the US-UK peace that Kate brokered. Kate, who is also dealing with her own crumbling marriage, teams up with First Gentleman Todd Penn, an uneasy pair, to stop Grace and Hal from pushing the country toward war.
At its heart, the season is about trust and betrayal at the highest levels. Kate learns she has been double-crossed and must ally with an unlikely partner to restore stability, all while the personal and political stakes keep climbing.

In a recent interview with Extra, Russell said the new season picks up right where the last one left off and that she loves how it ends. She described a power dynamic between Kate and Hal that keeps shifting. Asked whether love and power can coexist, she answered, “Maybe not all at once.”
Her co-star Rufus Sewell added that the finale of the previous season makes Hal look like he has done something dangerous and deceptive, and the new episodes explore his reasons. That promise of context should reassure viewers who were left reeling by the last cliffhanger. It also hints at a more layered portrait of a character whose motives have kept audiences guessing.
Russell stars as Kate Wyler, opposite Sewell as Hal Wyler. Allison Janney plays President Grace Penn, and Bradley Whitford plays Todd Penn. Nana Mensah is back as Billie Appiah and is now a series regular.
The ensemble also includes Ato Essandoh and Ali Ahn, plus Rory Kinnear as Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge. With Janney and Whitford firmly in the middle of the plot, the season looks set to dig deeper into the power couples at its center.

Russell used the same interview to react to Matthew Rhys winning two lead actor Emmys this year, for ‘Widow’s Bay’ and ‘The Beast in Me’. She said, “We were so screaming for him.” That celebratory mood adds extra goodwill as the series heads into its next chapter.
With the premiere only days away, expect more promotional appearances and teases from the cast. For viewers, the countdown is nearly over.
