‘Coven Academy’ Casts a Spell on Gen Alpha With a Streaming Debut That Has Disney Smiling

Every generation seems to get its own wave of witches, and the latest one arrives with the youngest viewers firmly in mind. ‘Coven Academy‘ has been pitched as a fast-moving fantasy for Gen Alpha, and creator Tim Federle has described it as a blend of ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘Wednesday’ and ‘Charmed.’

The road to the screen began on March 11, 2025, when Disney Branded Television ordered a pilot, and the series was formally greenlit that August. Federle, who also created ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,’ developed it under his overall deal with Disney. The show was originally planned for Disney Channel before landing at Freeform, with production running in Vancouver from December 5, 2025 to March 5, 2026.

Now the viewership numbers are in, and they back up the pitch. TheWrap reports exclusively that the show logged 11.4 million global hours viewed for its first chapter in its first week, based on internal Disney figures. The breakdown by platform was not provided.

The series debuted on Freeform on October 1, and the full season followed the next day on Disney+, Hulu and Freeform on demand. Nielsen data cited in the report ranked it as the No. 1 streaming series among teens ages 12 to 17 across premiere weekend, and in the top 5 among all viewers.

The first chapter was also posted on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube on October 2, the same day as the Disney+ premiere. That strategy generated more than 30 million additional views, including 18 million on TikTok, 11 million on Instagram and 2.4 million on YouTube.

Those figures matter because Gen Alpha viewers are described as TikTok-oriented, and a short-form clip is often the first doorway into a show. It is a smart way to meet an audience where it already spends its time.

Season 1 is made up of 21 chapters running 10 to 15 minutes each, shorter than Disney’s typical 21-minute episodes but not as short as microdramas. Federle shot 10 episodes and then cut them into chapters, placing cliffhangers at key moments to keep the story propulsive.

The show is set in New Orleans and follows 3 teenage witches and their warlock peers as they face deadly secrets, dangerous power and forbidden love. The young cast includes Malina Weissman, Malachi Barton, Jordan Leftwich, Ora Duplass and Louis Thresher, with Tiffani Thiessen and Devon Sawa playing adult roles.

Federle says he saw a gap for old-school, WB and CW-style genre storytelling, since much of the YA competition leans toward grounded love triangles. “Every generation deserves their own witch show,” he said in an interview with TheWrap. He also described the series as a family-friendly option that is not overly dark or gory, after testing it with tweens, 15- to 17-year-olds and Gen X viewers.

Beyond Disney’s own numbers, the series has picked up strong word of mouth. As of October 4, it held a 100% Fresh rating from critics and an 80% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it was reported as the most-viewed title on Disney+ during its launch.

Public chart data tells a similar story, though these are estimates rather than official viewing hours. According to FlixPatrol, it ranked No. 1 on Disney+’s U.S. series chart ahead of ‘American Horror Story’ and ‘The Drop: A Snowfall Saga,’ and placed 3rd on the overall Disney+ chart on October 5 behind ‘Toy Story 5’ and ‘Hocus Pocus.’

Disney has not announced a second season, but the creative team is clearly thinking ahead. Federle has floated ideas that include following Jake and Briar, Ollie’s return and Sasha’s storyline with her vampire brother, and he has said he would rather add new episodes with the existing cast than introduce many new characters.

Weissman, meanwhile, has said she is undecided between the love interests Jake and Ollie, which is exactly the kind of debate that keeps fans talking. If the early momentum holds, a renewal would hardly be a surprise.

Should Disney renew Coven Academy for Season 2?
