Eiza González has long been one of the most polished presences on any red carpet. The Mexican actress started out at 16 in the children’s telenovela ‘Lola, érase una vez’, and she has since built a Hollywood career with ‘Baby Driver’, ‘I Care a Lot’ and ‘3 Body Problem’.

Her latest role asks her to look nothing like that glamorous image. In ‘I Love Boosters’, she plays Violeta, and she underwent a dramatic change of look for the part. The character is described as a cashier who moonlights as an expert in dialectical materialism, and reviewers have called her an unlikely genius.

That made the contrast especially fun on Friday, October 9, when González walked the red carpet at the 70th BFI London Film Festival for the Gala presentation of the film. She wore a black gown with a lace-trimmed bodice, thin straps and a sheer tulle skirt, paired with drop earrings and long, sleek hair. She posed in front of the festival’s colorful striped backdrop, and the look was a world away from Violeta’s wardrobe.

The evening marked the film’s International Premiere at the festival. Naomi Ackie and director Boots Riley were also on the red carpet as the festival’s first weekend got underway.

Riley is no stranger to the event. His debut feature ‘Sorry to Bother You’ screened at the BFI London Film Festival in 2018, and he later created the series ‘I’m a Virgo’. ‘I Love Boosters’ is his second feature, an absurdist, anti-capitalist crime comedy that world-premiered at SXSW on March 12.

The story follows The Velvet Gang, a crew of shoplifting boosters led by aspiring fashion designer Corvette, played by Keke Palmer. They target the boutiques of fashion entrepreneur Christie Smith, played by Demi Moore. When Smith steals one of Corvette’s own designs, the gang is pushed to the next level.

Ackie plays Sade and Taylour Paige plays Mariah, rounding out the central trio. The supporting cast includes LaKeith Stanfield, Poppy Liu, Will Poulter and Don Cheadle, with Stanfield playing a mysterious character who wears a pinky ring.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, González said the most radical part of the role was acting alongside a group of women for the first time. She described the Atlanta production as a sisterhood built around shared experiences as women of color in Hollywood. The film also had a female director of photography.

That camaraderie spilled over into the film’s press events. At a sold-out screening in Oakland on April 28, González dared Liu to do the splits on stage, and Liu happily did it, even repeating the move on the red carpet.

Early reviews from the festival have been lively. One critic called the film absurd, unhinged and hilarious, saying Palmer and Moore steal the show while describing González’s Violeta as weird yet memorable. Another outlet said González, Liu and Poulter all deliver scene-stealing moments whenever their characters appear.

Not every review is a rave. A critic who caught the film in Seattle said it has more strength in its style than in its story, though the festival crowd was far from bored. Those mixed notes suit a film that wears its eccentricity proudly.

The anniversary edition of the festival runs from October 7 through October 18 and features 251 titles from 88 countries. It opened with Simon Stone’s ‘Elsinore’ and will close with Jesse Eisenberg’s ‘The Debut’. The lineup includes 109 works by female filmmakers, making up 43% of the programme, along with 33 world premieres.

González has also appeared in ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’ and Hulu’s ‘La Máquina’, which shows how far her range stretches. Seeing her step out in sheer black lace for a film where she barely resembles herself is a reminder of that versatility.

What do you think of Eiza González’s sheer black lace look at the BFI London Film Festival?
