‘Clayface’ Is Tracking Strong as DC’s Body Horror Gamble Gets a Solid Pre-Sales Start

DC Studios has spent the year proving that not every comic book movie needs a $200 million price tag. With ‘Clayface’, the studio is testing a stripped-down, R-rated body horror idea in the middle of the Halloween season, and early box office signals are starting to arrive.

The film is the third DC Universe release, following ‘Superman’ and ‘Supergirl’. It arrives in a year when horror has been among the most reliable genres at the box office.

‘Clayface‘ carries a reported $40 million production budget, small by superhero standards. Using the usual rule of thumb that a film needs roughly 2 to 2.5 times its budget to turn a profit, the break-even point lands around $80 million to $100 million worldwide.

It opens October 23 from Warner Bros., with international release beginning two days earlier. Competition includes ‘Street Fighter’, which opens the same weekend, while the following weekend looks lighter for the film.

The latest buzz is encouraging. The film is now tracking for a $30 million-plus domestic opening following a solid start to ticket pre-sales.

That figure sits at the top of the early industry forecast. Boxoffice Pro’s first long-range projection put the film between $23 million and $33 million for its domestic debut, and the new tracking suggests it is leaning toward the higher end.

Even the low end of that range would equal more than half of the film’s budget in a single weekend. Weekday sales could add another 35% to 50% of the opening weekend total, which could push the first full week to between $34 million and $48 million.

‘Clayface’ Presales Trail ‘Resident Evil’ by a Wide Margin, and DC’s Horror Gamble Faces Some Tricky Math

The obvious yardstick is ‘Supergirl’, which opened to $37.1 million domestically in June but finished with only about $126 million worldwide, a result widely described as disappointing. A $30 million start for ‘Clayface’ would be smaller, but it would cost far less to reach.

‘Superman’, by contrast, earned $618.7 million worldwide. That film set a high bar for the DCU, and ‘Clayface’ isn’t trying to match it.

It also helps that ‘Clayface’ follows a 2026 horror wave. Titles like ‘Obsession’, ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Resident Evil’ have all become hits, and the Halloween corridor has historically rewarded scary movies.

Not every early read is as rosy, which is worth flagging. One analysis found that pre-sales for ‘Clayface’ trail ‘Resident Evil’ by a wide margin, and translated that gap into an opening of roughly $20 million. ‘Resident Evil’ opened to $60 million domestically.

Another projection from Box Office Theory pointed to $20 million to $26 million. Those numbers would still leave a path to profit, and walk-up sales after reviews could change the picture.

There is one other encouraging data point. Earlier tracking showed that awareness of the film sat at just 32%, yet people who knew about it were planning to see it on opening weekend at nearly double the normal rate.

The film follows Matt Hagen, a rising movie star who is brutally disfigured by a local mob boss and volunteers for an experimental procedure to restore his face. Tom Rhys Harries stars as Hagen, alongside Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan.

James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran produce, and Safran has described the project as DC’s take on ‘The Fly’.

Watkins’ last theatrical outing, ‘Speak No Evil’, opened to $11.3 million domestically, so a $30 million debut would represent a big step up for the director.

Boxoffice Pro noted that casual moviegoers may struggle to tell one B-list Batman villain from another, which means marketing and word of mouth will matter. Reviews and first reactions are expected in the coming weeks and could lift walk-up business in a way pre-sales can’t capture.

The stakes extend past one weekend. ‘Clayface’ is the last DC movie until ‘Man of Tomorrow’ arrives next July, so a healthy showing would send DC into the new year with momentum.

Do you think DC's Clayface will open above $30 million at the domestic box office?
