Jessica Lange has never been shy about speaking her mind, and her return to ‘American Horror Story‘ has given her plenty of chances to do it. The two-time Emmy winner is back in the spotlight for the first time in years, and she’s using it to settle a few old scores. This week, a candid panel moment reminded everyone why fans love her.

Lange originated the franchise’s earliest and most iconic roles, and she won Emmys for her work in 2012 and 2014. After leaving following the fourth season, ‘Freak Show,’ she returned only for a one-episode cameo in 2018’s ‘Apocalypse.’ In a 2019 interview, she said the chances of coming back were very slim, so her return for the current season surprised plenty of people.

Now the 77-year-old actress has revealed a lingering complaint with the network that made her a TV star. At a PaleyFest panel in New York City, Lange said FX was too cheap to provide a basic perk for the cast, saying the actors had to drive themselves to set. She followed the remark with a sarcastic salute, and she called it “still a bone of contention” for her.

The comment came while Lange was seated next to Sarah Paulson. Paulson reacted instantly, exclaiming agreement as Lange named the network outright and then repeated that the cheapness was the reason the stars didn’t get cars. Paulson laughed along, which only added to the moment.

The panel was a celebration of the show’s legacy. Co-executive producer Lou Eyrich accepted the inaugural PaleyFest Award on behalf of the series before joining Lange, Paulson, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe and Leslie Grossman for an hour-long discussion hosted by The Hollywood Reporter. Footage of Lange’s remark spread online, and Entertainment Weekly reported that it has reached out to FX for comment.

Lange has said she wasn’t an easy get for this season. She told fans that creator Ryan Murphy talked her into returning, and that her one condition was reviving all four of her iconic characters: Constance Langdon from ‘Murder House,’ Sister Jude from ‘Asylum,’ Fiona Goode from ‘Coven’ and Elsa Mars from ‘Freak Show.’ She also revealed there’s a fifth mystery character she won’t spoil.

She has described Constance as Murphy’s favorite character and called Elsa the one she loved playing most. At the panel, she also joked about whether the season would close out the franchise, saying Murphy had initially presented it as the final chapter. That leaves room for a future return, though she was noncommittal about it.

‘American Horror Story: 13’ premiered on September 24 on FX and Hulu, and it airs Thursdays at 9 pm. The season has been described as a greatest-hits installment, bringing back characters from several earlier seasons. Paulson reportedly plays six characters, Evan Peters five, Lange four and Lourd two.

The cast also includes Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Grossman and newcomer Ariana Grande. For many fans, seeing the old coven back together has been the main draw. That nostalgia has made the series’ comeback one of the fall’s biggest TV events.

Behind-the-scenes complaints about network penny-pinching are a classic Hollywood tradition, and Lange’s remark landed because it came with humor and a salute. It’s also a reminder that even the biggest stars of a hit series deal with unglamorous logistics. For a franchise built on camp, melodrama and excess, the irony is hard to miss.

The comment is unlikely to hurt her relationship with Murphy, who has praised her repeatedly, but it adds a layer of personality to a milestone season. FX hasn’t publicly responded as of the latest reports. For now, the only question is whether the network will take the hint if the cast ever reunites again.

Jessica Lange says FX was too cheap to provide cars for the cast of American Horror Story. Do you agree with her?
