Few sequels have had a road as winding as the follow-up to Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman.’ The film has been delayed, rescheduled and delayed again, and fans have spent years waiting to see Robert Pattinson return as the Dark Knight. Just when cameras were finally rolling, another bump appeared.

The first ‘The Batman’ opened in March 2022, and the sequel was originally scheduled for October 2025 before slipping to October 2, 2026. It later moved to October 1, 2027, and in July it was pushed again to February 18, 2028, to allow more time for post-production. Filming began in the UK this summer, with shoots across London, Liverpool and Glasgow.

Then, on October 5, Warner Bros. and DC Studios announced that production had been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter, according to Deadline’s exclusive report. The studio said Reeves has its full support and that it looks forward to continuing the journey soon. Now, Pattinson himself has weighed in.

Speaking in a short red carpet clip at the BFI London Film Festival, Pattinson addressed the situation directly. He said the production is pausing for a little bit, and that the team will then figure everything out. It was a calm, upbeat response that reassured fans without offering specifics.

His tone matches the studio’s message that the pause is temporary. Pattinson didn’t speculate on how long it might last or whether the schedule would change. For now, his comments suggest the cast and crew remain committed to getting back to work.

The big question is whether the pause will affect the February 18, 2028 release date. Sources told Deadline it’s too early to say. The film’s previous delay was partly intended to give Reeves extra time for post-production, so the schedule may have some room to absorb a short break.

That said, the length of the pause will matter. Reports say the production includes a lot of night shooting, which makes scheduling complicated. Fans have grown used to waiting, but few want another long delay.

The cast is stacked. Alongside Pattinson, Andy Serkis returns as Alfred, Colin Farrell is back as the Penguin and Jeffrey Wright returns as Jim Gordon. New additions include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham and Sebastian Koch.

Reeves co-wrote the script with Mattson Tomlin, and Erik Messerschmidt has taken over as cinematographer from Greig Fraser. The film remains part of DC’s Elseworlds label, separate from James Gunn’s DC Universe. Pattinson has previously told Collider that the sequel is highly ambitious and a real change of direction from the first film.

Reaction online has been largely supportive of Reeves. Many fans have said they’re willing to wait as long as it takes, and the tone has been more sympathetic than frustrated. A family matter is a reminder that even blockbuster productions answer to real life.

For now, the best anyone can do is be patient. Pattinson’s calm update offers a little reassurance that the pause is just that, a pause. With a cast this strong and a director this invested, the wait may still pay off.

Will The Batman Part II make its February 2028 release date?
