‘Line of Fire’ Episode 4 Recap & Ending Explained: Jane’s Confession About Jack Blows the Hollingsworth Secret Wide Open
Every family keeps secrets, but few keep them with the training the Hollingsworths bring to the job. NBC’s ‘Line of Fire‘ has spent its early weeks proving that a household of Secret Service agents, FBI investigators and U.S. Marshals is also a household full of things nobody is supposed to say out loud. This week’s closing scene is the clearest example yet.
Created by Joshua Safran, the drama debuted to 8.6 million viewers, a 48% increase on the network’s Monday slot last season. Since the premiere, a killer who leaves origami cranes behind has been circling the family, and Homeland Security Detective Nia Wallace has been circling right back. Last week also established that Mike’s son Jack, supposedly dead for 5 years, is alive and working under the alias “David.”
That tension snaps in the final minutes of “Paper Trails.” Jane decides to stop stonewalling and tells Nia the truth about her stepson. Five years ago, after 6 years as a Navy SEAL, Jack was offered an undercover assignment for life, and the only way to take it was to die.
The case of the week begins when a package bomb detonates at the home of the Secretary of Agriculture, the day before his daughter Abby’s wedding. Nobody is hurt. Jane pulls in Clare, but Mike arrives with the Secret Service, and the father-daughter friction over how to run the case becomes its own storyline.
Threat letters written in red ink lead investigators to Hank Baxter, the family’s retired lawyer. Bomb-making materials turn up in his storage unit, but Clare notices his fingerprints look like those of a man who panicked on seeing a bomb, not one who built it. Her instincts prove right.
Hank walks into a Secret Service sting carrying a gift-wrapped bomb with no detonator, and he is shot. Clare keeps pushing and uncovers evidence that Hank wasn’t a drunk at all but was showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Mike’s easygoing charm then gets the Keanes talking when Clare’s blunt approach couldn’t.
The culprit is the Secretary’s wife, Meredith Keane. She mailed the threats and steered Hank to his death because his failing mind made him a risk to a buried secret: the couple took Abby from their housekeeper years ago, with Hank’s help. Meredith is arrested for his murder.
Elsewhere, Micah is guarding the president’s daughter, Sydney, when he accidentally drinks water laced with ecstasy. His family scrambles to sober him up before his shift ends, while Nia turns up asking to question him as a person of interest. The fallout pushes Micah and Russ into a long-overdue argument about how little they tell each other.
The review from So There’s That reads Jack’s presumed death as the root of those fractures: Clare leaned on Mom, Micah on Dad, and Russ was left on his own. It is the episode’s quieter thread, and it sets up what Jane does next.

The Keanes lied to their daughter “in the name of love,” and Clare says as much in a late scene, without realizing how neatly it describes her own parents. Mike and Jane argue about whether to tell the kids, and Jane fears they’d never forgive the lie. By giving Nia the full story, she is choosing to protect her children by confessing to someone else.
Jane’s version is also carefully shaped. She tells Nia that a CIA contact believes Jack died during his mission within the last 2 years, and that someone who knew him is taunting the family with the cranes. Viewers know better, which means Jane is either misdirecting Nia or genuinely doesn’t know the truth. It’s a fair question which of those is scarier.

The cost is real. By handing over cranes she took from crime scenes, Jane risks an internal investigation and possible criminal charges. Meanwhile, Jack is quietly gathering counterintelligence on Nia and her task force, even breaking into the precinct. Her deal with Nia is simple: she’ll answer anything if Nia leaves her kids out of it.
Don’t expect tidy answers soon. Safran, speaking to TV Insider, said the writers’ room was still working on later episodes and that “we’re still dealing with stuff regarding Logan.” The next installment is already scheduled for October 19.
What do you think Jane is really trying to do?
