Inde Navarrette Hints She’ll Put Her Own Spin on Rogue in Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ Reboot
Few casting announcements this year have sparked as much debate as the news that Inde Navarrette would play Rogue in Marvel’s ‘X-Men‘ reboot. The ‘Obsession’ breakout was a relative unknown just a year ago, and fans have been watching closely to see how she approaches one of the franchise’s most beloved mutants.
Navarrette’s rise has been remarkable. ‘Obsession’, made on a $750,000 budget, grossed over $500 million worldwide, and her performance as Nikki Freeman turned her into one of the most talked-about actresses of the year. She also spoke openly about meeting Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ director Jake Schreier before any role was announced, and said her dream part was actually Mystique rather than Rogue.
Now she has offered a fresh hint at how she’ll approach the character. Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter’s ‘Awards Chatter’ podcast, recorded in front of 500 students at Chapman University, Navarrette said acting brings the freedom of becoming a completely different person, and Rogue is one of those people. She described paying respect to the Marvel writers and to Schreier, taking what they want to do, and then “adding my own sauce.”
Marvel formally unveiled Navarrette as Rogue at the D23 event in August, alongside the rest of the new team. Sadie Sink leads as Jean Grey, a role first revealed in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, with Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X and Samara Weaving as Emma Frost. Maya Boyd plays Storm, and Adam Driver surprised the audience as the villain Mister Sinister.
The reveal drew mixed reactions. Fans had expected Cailee Spaeny to land the role based on a rumor, and some questioned whether Navarrette’s sudden fame played a role in her casting. Lenore Zann, who voices Rogue in ‘X-Men ’97’, publicly congratulated her.
Navarrette has been clear that she wants to do the role justice. She told the Los Angeles Times that she has studied the character and wants to honor what the filmmakers are building, what she hopes to see as a fan, and her own vision. She has not revealed plot details or how Marvel plans to distinguish its version of Anna Marie from earlier screen portrayals.
Kevin Feige has described Schreier’s film as very youth-oriented and has teased that it will be Jean Grey’s story. He has also confirmed that it will be the first of many projects in what Marvel is calling the Mutant Saga. The movie is set to arrive after ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, with a release date of May 5, 2028.
Schreier, who directed ‘Thunderbolts*’, is helming the project. The script is credited to Lee Sung Jin, the creator of ‘Beef’, Joanna Calo, who wrote on ‘Thunderbolts*’, and Michael Lesslie, who wrote the original version. Lesslie’s pitch was reportedly inspired by ‘X-Men ’97’, which proposed a roster modeled on that animated series.
Navarrette has said she was drawn to Schreier because of what he did on ‘Thunderbolts*’. She told Variety that she thought the film had brought back what she used to love about Marvel, namely character-driven storytelling. That makes the pairing a natural fit for a story that centers on young mutants finding their place.
For now, no footage or first look at Rogue has been released, and the film is in pre-production. Navarrette’s comments suggest she plans to honor the character’s history while making the role her own. It’s a delicate balance, especially for a character with such a devoted fanbase.
With the movie still more than a year and a half away, there will be plenty of time for speculation. The mutant era of the MCU is just getting started, and Rogue will be at its center.
