Few TV franchises are as steeped in expectation as ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power‘. After a long wait between seasons, Middle-earth is finally close to returning, and Prime Video has just started turning up the heat.

The series has become one of Amazon’s biggest drivers for new Prime membership signups, with over 185 million viewers worldwide. Its first season was Prime Video’s biggest TV series premiere ever, and the second ranks among the streamer’s top 5 most-watched returning seasons. The show also crossed 1 billion minutes watched on Nielsen’s streaming charts during the week of August 24 to September 1.

Now the third season is only a month away. A new 17-second teaser posted today, with the tagline “One month. One ring. One season to rule them all,” shows Sauron in dark, spiked armor leading a procession of orcs through shadowy halls. The season premieres Wednesday, November 11, exclusively on Prime Video.

The streamer has chosen an unusual rollout. The first 4 episodes arrive on November 11, followed by episodes 5 and 6 on November 18, and the final 2 episodes on November 25. That means the 8-episode season debuts with half its run, then wraps in just 3 weeks.

The wait has also been shorter than usual. Filming started in June 2025 and wrapped in December 2025, so the season arrives about 11 months later, compared with the roughly 20 months between the second season’s wrap and its release. The show was renewed in February 2025 and is part of a planned five-season arc.

The official description promises a darker story. Several years after the events of the second season, the season takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win. His armies have marched across the world, conquering all in their path, and viewers will see Sauron inside the tower of Barad-dûr for the first time.

The Comic-Con trailer focused on Sauron heading to Mount Doom to create the ring. It also teased tensions in Númenor, a quest involving Galadriel, Arondir and an orc, and a reunion between Celeborn and Galadriel. The season also introduces ring-servants of Sauron who are the Second Age incarnation of the Nazgûl.

The season starts in the wake of heavy losses. In the second season finale, Sauron killed Celebrimbor, Durin III fell against the Balrog, and Adar was killed by orcs at Sauron’s order. The Siege of Eregion also left Sauron in possession of the Nine Rings.

The returning cast includes Morfydd Clark as Galadriel, Charlie Vickers as Sauron, Maxim Baldry as Isildur and Daniel Weyman as Gandalf. Jamie Campbell Bower has been revealed as Celeborn, and Eddie Marsan has joined the cast. Comic-Con also revealed new additions, including Andrew Richardson as Anarion, the younger son of Elendil and brother of Isildur, Zubin Varla and Adam Young, who plays an orc named Marnûkh. Simon Pegg’s casting was also announced.

J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay serve as showrunners. Reports suggest the team plans to start developing the fourth season this fall, with shooting planned for early 2027, which would keep the pace faster than in earlier years.

For now, the focus is on the One Ring and the dark road that leads to it. With the teaser countdown underway, expectations are rising for a season that promises to be the show’s most menacing yet.
