‘The Lowdown’ Season 2 Episodes 1 & 2 Premiere Recap and Ending Explained: A Missing Prisoner, a Shot Guard and Lee’s Estranged Father
Few shows make a ‘The Lowdown‘ recap as much fun to write as FX’s Tulsa-set neo-noir, where every investigation starts with a bad decision and a worse outfit. Season 2 returns with a back-to-back premiere, and the story of Ethan Hawke’s self-proclaimed “truthstorian” has already taken a stranger turn.
Season 1 ended with Lee Raybon cracking the Washberg family mystery, and the new season opens with him being rewarded for it. A local citizen journalist award is the kind of success Lee simply cannot handle. Hawke told TV Insider that Lee is going through an existential crisis about the meaninglessness of success.
That crisis fuels the two episodes, “The Rupidoop” and “Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound.” Together they set up a new mystery involving a public defender, a missing inmate and a prison guard network that clearly has something to hide. They also deliver the return of a man Lee has spent years pretending was dead.
Lee shows up to the ceremony high on mushrooms and turns his acceptance speech into a rant against sellouts. He also takes shots at his father and breaks the award. His daughter Francis, who was in the audience, is not impressed.
At the bar afterward, Lee meets Ginger, a public defender played by Betty Gilpin. She tells him two men have been following her, and Lee soon spots them in the bathroom, one with an SS tattoo. Ginger slips away, and Lee ends up beaten by writers offended by his speech.
The next day, Lee offers Ginger his help. She reveals that a former client, Mekko Dean, has gone silent in prison, and her connection to him is more personal than professional. Lee volunteers to visit Boontill Prison posing as press.
The man who meets him there seems like an impostor, which is the “rupidoop” of the title: a fake inmate used to fool outsiders. Killer Mike’s Cyrus mocks Lee for mentioning Ginger’s name to one, and it turns out one of the guards is also one of the men who followed her. Later, Lee hears gunshots at Ginger’s place and finds a masked man bleeding and running away after she fired her pistol.
The premiere opens on an elderly man wandering a highway who tells a cop his name is Lee Raybon Sr. Played by Tommy Lee Jones, he is the estranged grifter father Lee told Francis was dead. The first episode ends with him being brought to his son.
The second episode opens with Lee Sr. eating beans at the bookshop desk while Lee demands to know if he’s for real. Lee hasn’t seen him in 17 years, and Lee Sr. says he came looking after reading about the award. When he introduces himself to Francis as her granddad, she tells him her grandfather is dead.

Lee tracks down the guard named McMann through a charity calendar and ends up at a bar called Secrets, where he meets recently fired corrections officer Chili Franks, played by Paul Schneider. Over a drunken evening, Chili grabs a shotgun and dances to Hank Williams Jr., then drives Lee to McMann’s house, hoping to win back his boss’s favor. McMann chases Lee through the trees, yelling about where Mekko is, and then shoots Chili in the head.
That question is the biggest clue of the premiere. McMann may not be the one who made Mekko disappear, yet he clearly wants to know where the prisoner is. Elsewhere, Ginger enlists a petty criminal named Pookie, played by Christopher Mintz-Plasse, to dig for information on Mekko.
So the ending leaves 3 problems for Lee: a missing inmate, a prison mafia willing to kill, and a father who may be up to something. One review called the second episode peak ‘The Lowdown’, and early critic reactions have been warm.
Fresh mysteries and new faces await in “The Lowdown” Season 2! The cast breaks down what to expect from the upcoming season. “The Lowdown” Season 2 premieres TONIGHT at 9/8c on FX and Hulu. https://t.co/4zAP4kNRLt
