Every season of a multiverse thriller needs a character who seems to know a little more than she should. In season two of the Apple TV series, that role belongs to Laurel in ‘Dark Matter‘, a woman who greets lost travelers with cookies, a welcome sign and a house full of other people’s stories. Apple TV shared a scene showing Charlie meeting Laurel, played by Margo Martindale, at an interdimensional waystation.

Her arrival has fans asking exactly who Laurel is and what she wants. Here is everything the show has revealed so far about this new face in the corridor, along with the questions her library leaves hanging.

Margo Martindale Plays Laurel in ‘Dark Matter’

Margo Martindale is credited as Laurel in season two of the series. The casting drew instant love online, with one viewer on the official video celebrating the arrival of an esteemed character actress.

The Mystery of Max in ‘Dark Matter’ Is the Show’s Most Heartbreaking Twist

Laurel is part of a fresh wave of additions to the show’s ensemble. The ten episode season premiered on Apple TV and is based on the novel by Blake Crouch, who serves as creator, showrunner and writer. Martindale’s character does not appear in the first season, which means her story is built entirely for the expanded multiverse of the second.

The setup around her is classic ‘Dark Matter’. Season two follows the Dessens as they try to settle into a quiet life in a world that seems safe, only for unimaginable forces to send them running again. Laurel’s home gives the story a place to catch its breath, even if that calm may not last.

Who Is Laurel the Librarian and Where Does She Live?

Laurel makes her debut in the seventh episode, titled ‘The Pyramid’. One reviewer described her as a new character, Laurel, the Librarian. The nickname fits, because her home is an elegant private library.

Charlie, the Dessens’ son, stumbles into it on his own. He sends up a prayer for help to the box, opens the door and steps into the library, where a doorbell alerts Laurel to his arrival. She is excited because she has never met a Charlie before, and she tells him he is in no danger.

Her backstory is just as strange. She explains that a couple of years ago she heard what sounded like an explosion while sleeping upstairs, then ran down to find three intruders, Jason, Amanda and the box itself. Since then, her house has apparently become a regular stop for travelers passing through.

The Traveler Notebooks Laurel Keeps

The most fascinating detail about Laurel is her collection of journals. Charlie finds notebooks labeled with different travelers’ names, including Jason, Amanda, Ryan and Blair, plus a single volume for Leighton. She has clearly spent a long time listening to the people who pass through her door.

Those conversations have given her a theory about how the box works. She finds the travelers’ stories strikingly interconnected, and they all tell her the same thing, that to reach where you want to go you need to remember something, ideally a person. It is a quiet piece of worldbuilding that turns her library into a kind of field guide for the multiverse.

That advice matters to Charlie right away. His only real memory of Max is from the hospital when they were four, but he has watched videos his mom made of the two of them, and Laurel suspects his favorite will guide him. The scene shows Laurel acting as a gentle mentor rather than an obstacle.

What Laurel’s Mystery Visitor Means for ‘Dark Matter’

Then comes the cliffhanger. A door clicks open at the end of the scene, Charlie looks at someone off screen and stands up uncertainly, and Laurel tells him it is okay. The person she called for help enters the room, but viewers never find out who it was.

Fans and critics are already suspicious. One recapper wonders why the box opens so conveniently into her library, and points out that she answered a question about being fine with the box in her house with the words “Something like that.” The same writer also questions what Laurel means when she says the corridor is no place for someone like her.

Those loose threads make Laurel one of the most intriguing additions to season two. She could be a generous host, a stranded traveler who chose to stay, or something stranger tied to the box itself. If you have a theory about who stepped into Laurel’s library to meet Charlie, the comments are the place to make your case.
