Denis Villeneuve Reveals Why James Bond Is the Perfect Escape From Arrakis After ‘Dune: Part Three’

Few directors have spent as much time in one fictional universe as Denis Villeneuve has with ‘Dune’. He first brought Frank Herbert’s desert planet to the screen in 2021, followed it with ‘Dune: Part Two’, which won 2 Oscars and grossed more than $714 million worldwide. Now he’s about to close the book on the trilogy.

That kind of commitment takes a toll. Villeneuve originally planned a break from the Known Universe after the second film, but he rolled straight into the third. He has also said that adapting ‘Dune Messiah’ would mark the end of his time on Arrakis.

So what comes next? The answer has been known for a while: the next James Bond movie. Now Villeneuve has explained why he chose 007 as his ‘Dune‘ follow-up, and his reasoning is pretty revealing. He told Empire that he knew he would need a very powerful rocket to pull him away from Arrakis, and that when he was asked to do the next Bond, he said that was exactly what he needed.

The comment comes from Empire’s world-exclusive cover story for the December issue, which goes on sale on October 22. It also features Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Anya Taylor-Joy, Robert Pattinson, Jason Momoa and Florence Pugh. The same interview digs into how ‘Dune: Part Three’ differs from what came before.

Villeneuve says the aim was to keep the same DNA while making a very different movie, with a different pacing. The film is set 17 years after ‘Part Two’, with Paul spending that time as Emperor, reshaping the galaxy. The characters are the same, but the world has totally changed.

He also says he wants to be severe with the material and not complacent. That attitude may explain why he sees a high-profile spy franchise as the right antidote. After 3 films in the same world, a clean break could be creatively necessary.

Amazon MGM Studios officially hired Villeneuve to direct the next Bond film in June 2025. Steven Knight, the creator of ‘Peaky Blinders’, was announced as the writer on July 31, 2025. Amy Pascal and David Heyman are producing, with Tanya Lapointe as an executive producer.

It’s a big moment for the franchise. This will be the first Bond movie developed under Amazon MGM’s creative control, following a deal with longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. It also follows 2021’s ‘No Time to Die’, Daniel Craig’s final outing as 007.

There is still no official title or release date. Reports suggest production in 2027 and a targeted release in November 2028. Knight said in September 2026 that the first draft of the script was done, and that he knows which actor he’s writing for.

The biggest question remains who will play Bond. Deadline reported that Villeneuve would begin the search once he finished ‘Dune: Part Three’, and that the filmmakers want an unknown British actor in his late 20s or early 30s. Sources said that criteria erases the vast majority of names speculated online.

In May 2026, Amazon MGM issued a rare official statement denying that someone had already been cast. At CinemaCon, the studio’s head of film, Courtenay Valenti, said the project was on track and that news would come very soon. The wait could be nearing its end.

There’s another detail fans will like. IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond has said he was praying Bond would also be filmed with IMAX cameras, as Villeneuve did with ‘Dune’. That would be a major draw for a franchise built on spectacle.

For now, Villeneuve’s attention is on finishing his ‘Dune’ trilogy properly. ‘Dune: Part Three’ arrives in theaters on December 18 from Warner Bros., shot primarily on 65mm film with sequences in IMAX. It was filmed from July to November 2025 in Budapest and Abu Dhabi.

After that, the focus shifts to 007. It’s a big jump from Herbert’s desert epic to Fleming’s world of spies, but few filmmakers are better equipped to pull it off. If ‘Dune’ was the rocket’s launchpad, Bond looks like the destination.

Is Denis Villeneuve the right choice to direct the next James Bond movie?
