‘The Diplomat’ Season 4 Debuts With Its Best-Ever Rotten Tomatoes Score
Political thrillers rarely get better with age, and streaming has made long-running dramas even harder to sustain. Yet ‘The Diplomat‘ has built a reputation for doing exactly that. Since its debut in 2023, Debora Cahn’s series has become one of Netflix’s most dependable prestige hits, with a steady October release schedule that fans now plan around.
That consistency has paid off with critics too. Across its first 3 seasons, the show held a 92% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, well ahead of the 77% that ‘House of Cards’ earned. It’s often described as that earlier series’ spiritual successor.
Now the fourth season has arrived, and the reviews are glowing. All 8 episodes landed on Netflix on October 15, and the season has debuted at a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the most critically acclaimed season of the series so far. There’s an important caveat, though: the score is based on only a handful of reviews, so it will likely shift as more critics weigh in.

Each season has improved on the last. Season 3 holds 97% from critics, Season 2 sits at 95% and Season 1 at 84%. Audience scores have been more varied, at 76%, 85% and 61% respectively, and the new season’s audience score has yet to appear.
That makes the fourth-season debut notable. The show has climbed steadily, and a perfect opening score cements its status as one of Netflix’s best-reviewed dramas. Netflix would be wise to keep the annual schedule going, as one critic put it.
The praise focuses on the writing and the ensemble. Screen Rant’s review called the season all poetic parallels disguised as soapy politics and relationship drama, and singled out Bradley Whitford’s performance as First Gentleman Todd Penn as a standout. TV Insider’s Matt Roush highlighted the witty dialogue and dizzying twists, and described the marriage at the center as one of the most deliciously complicated on TV.
Other reviews called it sharper than ever, and praised the scenes between Keri Russell and Allison Janney as gripping battles of will. Jodie Whittaker, a newcomer this season, earned notes for bringing an icy yet personable confidence as a new adversary for Kate.
Not every review is a rave. One critic said the new season feels like an echo of what enthralled viewers before, and described the show as domesticated. Another noted that the story gets a little crowded, and that the aftermath of the first episode’s cliffhanger underwhelms.
The season picks up after the third season’s betrayals. Kate Wyler, now the American ambassador to the UK, had figured out that her husband, Vice President Hal Wyler, had conspired with President Grace Penn to remove a nuclear weapon from a submarine, and to lie to her about it. She had effectively been used as a pawn in negotiations with the prickly UK.
Meanwhile, Todd Penn has noticed the chummy vibes between Grace and Hal, and he isn’t thrilled either. He also encroaches on Kate’s job, adding fuel to a delicate relationship between the two countries. Cahn has described the season as built on the foursome of Kate, Hal, Grace and Todd, telling Netflix Tudum they are “two couples strapped together in one car” on a crumbling roller coaster.
The principal cast is back. Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell lead as Kate and Hal, with Allison Janney as Grace and Whitford as Todd. Janney and Whitford, who both starred in ‘The West Wing’, were promoted to series regulars this season.
Rory Kinnear, David Gyasi, Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn and Nana Mensah round out the ensemble. Russell, Sewell, Janney and Whitford are all Emmy nominees, and their chemistry is a major reason the show works. Cahn herself has praised the group, describing the combination as an insane bag of candy.

At its core, the series balances political intrigue with intimate marital drama. The dialogue is quick, the stakes are high and the characters are allowed to be messy. That mix has proved a strong formula for Netflix.
If the early reviews hold, the fourth season could cement ‘The Diplomat’ as one of the platform’s flagship dramas. For now, there’s plenty to binge, and viewers will decide whether the new episodes live up to the hype.
Does The Diplomat Season 4 deserve its perfect Rotten Tomatoes score?
