‘9-1-1’ Season 10 Episode 1 Premiere Recap & Ending Explained: Does Athena Survive the Volcano and Who Dies?
Every year, ‘9-1-1‘ kicks off its new season with a disaster that makes the last one look tame, and this time the ground itself turned on Los Angeles. The ‘9-1-1’ premiere ending, which aired Oct. 15 on ABC, leaves fans with plenty of questions about what just happened beneath the city. Here is a full recap and breakdown of how it all unfolded.
After sending its characters into space last year, the first responder drama went underground for this milestone return. The season airs Thursdays on ABC and streams the next day on Hulu. According to showrunner Tim Minear, the season also centers on Buck fostering Theo, who is actually his biological son, after Theo’s parents die in a car crash, while Athena’s daughter May starts training to become a nurse.
The premiere, “That Sinking Feeling,” begins with a collapsing highway and ends with the revelation that the sinkhole was only the beginning. By the final moments, a massive burst of lava explodes from the ruins in downtown Los Angeles. The 118 now faces something no rescue manual could prepare it for.
The episode opens as the highway crumbles and sinks beneath a tour bus and several cars. The 118 arrives to find the sinkhole growing, and it nearly takes Chimney with it. The team descends into the hole to extract survivors and treat victims.
Complications pile up fast. A powerline falls onto the tour bus, an older student driver’s ICD won’t stop defibrillating, and Buck and Ravi struggle to free a trapped father. Harry finds an actress trapped in her car with little breathing room, and Eddie revives the older man before diving underwater to save her. The 118 saves everyone, but as the team prepares to leave, the water in the sinkhole begins to bubble.
Maddie, now heading the 9-1-1 dispatch center, attends a debrief with city officials led by Ty Worrell (Rob Huebel) of the Office of Emergency Management. He wants to know how something this large happened without a single warning sign. Maddie speaks up, saying there actually was one, and she is tasked with combing the calls for patterns.
She finds a troubling run of calls near the sinkhole about strange behavior and physical ailments. That ties in with the 118’s recent aquarium call, where high sulphur levels were turning the water acidic and endangering a snorkeler. Maddie places a late-night call to Ty with her concerns.
Ty changes his tune when the sinkhole begins emitting a high-pitched frequency, but it is too late to act. An explosion from below sends magma flying, and one molten piece lands directly on his head. Ty is killed, making him the volcano’s first victim.
The eruption fills the sky with lava and confirms Maddie’s fear that the sinkhole was merely the opening act. The firefighters and officials do what they can to get people to safety, but the tragedy is only starting. The 118 now has to survive a disaster that nobody saw coming.

Athena’s storyline provides the episode’s personal cliffhanger. Newly promoted to detective, she questions her new role, especially when her first case involves a Shih Tzu. The case takes a turn when she realizes a ring was stolen from a local jewelry store, and the burned man in her investigation dies from his injuries.
Her search leads her underground into a tunnel. While she is inside, a major tremor strikes and seemingly leaves her trapped. The episode does not show her being rescued or confirm that she dies, so her fate carries into the next installment.
Amid the volcanic chaos, the premiere makes room for Buck’s life as a single father. He has made 3 non-work trips to the ER in recent months, and Eddie clearly disagrees with his parenting style. Theo accidentally causes Christopher to fall, forcing Buck to see when he needs to be firmer.
TV Fanatic’s review argues that Theo has been given plenty of leniency because his life was ripped apart overnight. Reviewers have been broadly positive about the opener, praising its ensemble rescue work and the way the separate storylines converge. One critique is that Athena investigating alone underground repeats a familiar danger setup.

With Ty dead and Athena’s fate unknown, the 118 faces its biggest emergency yet. Maddie’s early warning could be the key to understanding what is happening under the city. The lava storyline, which fans are already calling “Lava Land,” is poised to dominate the weeks ahead.
Will Athena survive the volcanic disaster in 9-1-1 Season 10?
