Julia Stiles (45) and Sean Patrick Thomas (55) Reunite on the Dance Floor, and ‘Save the Last Dance’ Fans Are Losing It
Some movie romances just refuse to fade. ‘Save the Last Dance’ is one of those films that people still talk about with a mix of affection and playful teasing, thanks to its Chicago setting, its hip-hop meets ballet story and a Juilliard audition scene fans can recite from memory. So when Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas stood side by side again, the internet noticed instantly.
Their reunion took place during Stiles’ run on the 35th season of ‘Dancing with the Stars’. The photo of the two co-stars together has been circulating widely, and it landed with a warm, nostalgic thud for anyone who grew up with the movie.
Stiles has had a funny relationship with her signature dance role. ‘Save the Last Dance’ arrived in January 2001 and followed Sara Johnson, a ballerina who moves to Chicago after her mother’s death and gets pulled into hip-hop dancing by a classmate named Derek, played by Thomas. Kerry Washington also starred as Chenille.
When Stiles joined the ‘Dancing with the Stars’ cast this season, the movie became a running joke. She has clarified in the past that she did not perform some of the film’s most complex dance moves herself, including the chair choreography, though she trained hard for the part. She also never actually attended Juilliard, which prompted a playful apology from the school and another from Andy Cohen, who had joked about her dancing last year.

On Tuesday night, Stiles and her professional partner, Ezra Sosa, performed a jazz routine to Jennifer Lopez’s ‘Jenny from the Block’. The choreography drew directly from the Juilliard audition scene in the film, right down to a prop chair. It was a clear wink at the movie that made her famous.
Then came the surprise. Thomas appeared in the wings behind Sosa, smiling and grooving along, and later told the show he was over the moon to be there to watch her. He added that they had a great time making the movie and that she brought it all the way back that night. The pair earned 33 out of 40 from the judges, which put them in 4th place on the night.
The photo of Stiles and Thomas posing together afterward sent fans into a frenzy. People described the moment as exactly what they had been waiting for, and plenty of viewers admitted they teared up watching the callback. For a generation that grew up on the film, seeing Sara and Derek back in the same room, a quarter of a century later, felt like a small cultural event.
Thomas also posted a tribute on Instagram praising his old friend’s performance, calling it an unforgettable night. The warmth between them has been consistent over the years, and that goodwill clearly translated on camera.
This isn’t the first time the cast has shown up for her. When Stiles was announced as part of the ‘Dancing with the Stars’ lineup on ‘Good Morning America’ in September, Washington and Thomas sent a congratulatory video message. Thomas joked that he had a front-row seat the last time she took on a similar challenge, and since she got into Juilliard in the movie, he knew she would crush it.
Their friendship has been visible for years. In 2021, the 2 stars reunited virtually to celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary, and each used the same word to describe how they feel about it now: pride. Stiles has also said she is proud of how the movie tackled prejudice and racial issues, and that it helped open her eyes to her own privilege.
Naturally, the reunion has revived the question of whether the story could continue. Stiles has previously pitched an idea in which Sara and Derek run into each other at a grocery store, with their adult lives in tow. Thomas told E! that he can’t think of anything plausible, noting that an easy reunion can feel too simple.
A 2nd movie, ‘Save the Last Dance 2’, arrived in 2006 as a direct-to-DVD release without Stiles, so the original duo has never officially returned to their characters. For now, the best sequel fans have is this one dance floor moment.
The beauty of this reunion is how natural it feels. Stiles turned a running joke about her dancing into a loving tribute, and Thomas showed up to cheer her on without making it a big production. It’s the kind of nostalgic crossover that reminds audiences why a teen movie can stick around for decades.
