‘The Odyssey’ Star Charlize Theron (51) Goes Sultry in Sheer Black Tom Ford Lace as the Academy Museum Gala’s Icon
Some honorees accept their awards in a sensible suit. Charlize Theron is not one of them. The Oscar winner has long balanced intense roles with a fearless approach to red carpet fashion, and her Academy Museum Gala look was a perfect example of that mix.
The sixth annual gala took place on October 17 in Los Angeles, and Theron was the evening’s Icon Award recipient, an honor that recognizes an artist whose career has had a significant global cultural impact. She was celebrated alongside Colman Domingo, who received the Vantage Award, and filmmaker John Carpenter, who got the Luminary Award. Taylor Swift performed, and last year’s edition raised more than $12 million.
For the occasion, Charlize Theron’s Academy Museum Gala look was a sheer black Tom Ford gown, designed by Haider Ackermann for the house. The long column dress combines lace and intricate bead-and-crystal embroidery with transparent fabric in a sultry, lingerie-inspired design.

In the carpet clip, Theron stands with both hands planted on her hips against softly draped curtains. The dress is sleeveless with a high neckline, and the bodice is built from lace panels, mesh and embroidery, with a completely sheer panel running down the front placket. The detailing continues across the hips, where the mesh reveals more skin, before the skirt turns into a flowing, transparent fall of black fabric.
The embroidery uses black beads and grey and black crystals in an architectural pattern, so the dress glimmers subtly as she moves. She kept her accessories minimal, with Boucheron jewelry, delicate silver pieces and strappy black heels, while her blond hair was swept back in a sleek, sophisticated style. Stylist Leslie Fremar curated the look.

The choice of Tom Ford made sense for the night. The designer himself attended the gala, and the house is one of the most recognizable names in black-tie dressing. Tom Ford is also known for dark, sensual tailoring, which suits a gown built around lace and sheer panels.
The look was also named to best-dressed lists from the evening, and The Zoe Report singled it out as part of the lingerie dressing trend, with cutouts and delicate embellishments.

Theron’s evening came after a build-up of tributes. In August, she took part in a conversation with members of the Academy Museum Teen Council before a screening of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ reflecting on her journey from small-town Benoni, South Africa, to winning the Best Actress Oscar for ‘Monster’ in 2004. She became emotional on stage, and she also shared that her oldest daughter was only six weeks old when filming began in Namibia.
‘Fury Road,’ in which she played Imperator Furiosa, earned 10 Academy Award nominations and won six. She has also continued to build her presence on screen, including the Netflix sequel ‘The Old Guard 2,’ which premiered on July 2, 2025, and a July appearance at the red carpet for ‘The Odyssey’ with Lupita Nyong’o and Anne Hathaway.

This isn’t the first time Theron has made a statement at a gala. In 2024, she wore a plunging monochrome Schiaparelli corset gown to the Baby2Baby Gala, where she received the Giving Tree Award for her work preventing gender-based violence and HIV among young people and promoting LGBTQ+ rights.
She has also worn a Dior Haute Couture pale silver gown with twist detailing at the bust. That range, from soft and sculptural to bold and sheer, is what keeps her carpet appearances interesting.
The guest list was huge. Pamela Anderson, Eva Longoria, Jessica Biel, Sabrina Carpenter, Anna Kendrick, Kate Hudson and Jessica Lange were among the stars walking the carpet, along with Demi Moore, who wore a dramatic two-tone gown.
In a field full of statement pieces, Theron’s gown stood out for its restraint and drama. It was daring without feeling forced.
The dress works because it feels both formal and daring. Lace and embroidery give it a couture quality, while the sheer panels keep it modern, and the sleek black palette ties it all together.
For an artist being honored with an Icon Award, it also feels right. It is confident, controlled and unmistakably her.
What do you think of Charlize Theron’s sheer black Tom Ford gown at the 2026 Academy Museum Gala?
