Camila Cabello Goes Gothic at the Academy Museum Gala in a Vintage Madonna-Print Skirt
Camila Cabello has built a reputation for treating the gala carpet as a place to experiment. Her 2024 Met Gala dress, a custom Ludovic de Saint Sernin creation, weighed 15 pounds and took 450 hours to make. So when she showed up at the Academy Museum Gala, expectations were high.
This year’s event was the 6th annual edition, held Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles. Charlize Theron was honored with the Icon Award, Colman Domingo with the Vantage Award and John Carpenter with the Luminary Award, while Taylor Swift was set to perform. Rolex presented the evening, and Robert Rodriguez, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw co-chaired.
Cabello’s arrival delivered. She embraced Gothic glamour in a black bodice and a draped mesh skirt that revealed an artwork with shimmering gold detailing beneath. It was one of the more talked-about looks of a night already crowded with big names.

The skirt came straight from the archive. It was a vintage Dolce & Gabbana piece from the Spring/Summer 1998 collection, styled by Ronnie Hart. The long, slim, sheer-layered skirt came in a washed grey-green, with a printed image of the Madonna and Child across the hips and thighs.
On top, she kept the silhouette sharp. A black satin strapless corset with a sweetheart neckline and visible boning sat just above the waistband. A long black chiffon scarf was tied loosely around her neck and fell down her back to the floor, working like a sheer cape.

The accessories leaned into the theme. A diamond cross pendant hung on a fine silver chain, joined by pear-shaped crystal drop earrings and a few chunky rings. The cross fits neatly with the religious imagery on the skirt, so the whole outfit reads as one idea.
Down below, black Rene Caovilla Erin sandals peeked out from under the hem and kept the attention on the skirt. Her dark hair was pinned up in a loose, messy updo, with wispy pieces framing her face and a side-swept fringe. The softness of the hair was a nice contrast to the structured corset.

Cabello is the Cuban-American singer who rose to fame in Fifth Harmony before going solo, and she keeps a close eye on vintage designer pieces. Her previous big fashion moment was a netted gold gown at the Lucas Museum opening, which makes the move from shimmering gold to moody grey-green and black a notable shift. She has long gravitated toward black, and this ensemble is one of her more dramatic takes on it.

She wasn’t the only singer to show up in style. ROSÉ, Sabrina Carpenter, Janelle Monáe and Teyana Taylor were among the musicians in attendance. Swift arrived in a strapless, pale blue pleated silk Dior gown with a beaded bow, and Carpenter also wore blue, so Cabello’s black corset and draped skirt offered a moodier counterpoint.
Ana de Armas, Joey King, Chloe Grace Moretz, Hannah Waddingham, Emmy Rossum, Kate Hudson and Mckenna Grace were also on the carpet. The event is often called the Met Gala of the West, and it lands right after the worldwide fashion weeks, which is why so many guests arrive in runway pieces. Cabello took a different route by pulling a piece from nearly 3 decades ago, and it stood out for exactly that reason.
The gala exists to raise money for the museum’s exhibitions, public screenings and education programs. Last year’s edition raised more than $12 million. Cabello’s look added to a night where fashion, music and film history all shared the same carpet.
